The Half Of It, The Wretched and All Day and a Night (2020)

When smart but cash-strapped teen Ellie Chu agrees to write a love letter for a jock, she doesn’t expect to become his friend – or fall for his crush.

Let me start off by saying I LOVE LGBT films I feel over the last few years they always bring something new to the table and really show a lot of talent (Love Simon, Call Me By Your Name, Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, Moonlight, Miseducation Of Cameron Post, Disobedience and many others) so naturally I was pretty interested in this movie….I really hate that I just didn’t like this movie. I can definitely understand where they were going with this movie. I just think it wasn’t done very well, the performances were definitely okay and the direction was fine enough. My main issue is this really did not bring anything new to the table, it felt like Love Simon but without the charm….charm was one of the major things that made Love Simon incredible, The Half Of It lacks it which is frustrating because I want to like the characters, I want to like the story but the movie just doesn’t give me a reason to. I’m sure this movie is going to have it’s fans which if you are one more power to you!!! This just wasn’t for me!

A defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parent’s imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand year-old witch, who is living beneath the skin of and posing as the woman next door.

This is going to be short….The Wretched is another IFC Midnight misfire, what completely destroys this movie is the writing. It feels like the writers had no idea what they wanted to do throughout the movie or had no idea what characters to focus on. The direction is really doesn’t have anything going for it at all either, I will say the acting is fine enough and there are moments from the movie that are pretty okay. Otherwise it’s typical horror movie that just isn’t very interesting at all.

A young man who committed a homicide deals with the repercussions of his action.

All Day and Night has an interesting premise there’s absolutely no denying that, I like the idea of someone’s environment changing them as a person and helping them grow. The premise has been done really well in certain films, however this isn’t one of them…the acting is at least decent but the execution is just so below average to the point where it’s just not that interesting, you can easily tell that everyone involved at least tried to make this movie work which does count for something. But it’s just way too forgettable and has nothing that really stands out from among the crowd, it’s definitely not a bad movie but it’s not something I would recommend watching.

Sometimes Always Never, To The Stars, True History Of The Kelly Gang and Greed (2020)

A man searches tirelessly for his missing son who he has not seen in years. When a body is located, the entire family’s life is turned upside-down and they must all learn how to reconnect with one another. This is an interesting one, I watched this several days ago it was hard for me to decide what rating I wanted to give this movie. But after thinking about it the movie has some really solid stuff in it. First off the cinematography is top notch, there are some really beautiful shots that were just wonderful to look at, the acting is quite great everyone does a pretty solid job in their roles. The writing could have been a bit stronger, plus I’m not going to lie this movie at times does come off as a Wes Andreson rip-off. Luckily it’s not to the point where it’s directly stealing, the movie does come up with it’s own ideas and combines the two so it has that going for it. It’s also a very relaxing movie to watch that I would most certainly watch again. I recommend giving this a go!

Under small town scrutiny, a withdrawn farmer’s daughter forges an intimate friendship with a worldly but reckless new girl in 1960s Oklahoma.

I really don’t have a lot to say about this one, mostly because a huge portion of the movie just did not do anything for me. I will say the first act of the movie was pretty strong and I liked where the movie was goin, but then it just kind of does a complete turn around in a not very good way. The performances were strong, the writing was solid but could have used another look, I do appreciate what this film was trying to do I just think it didn’t do it very well.

Based on Peter Carey’s novel. The story of Australian bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang as they flee from authorities during the 1870s.

Justin Kurzel redeems himself with this movie and I couldn’t be happier, he directed Snowtown, Macbeth (Which I love) and the abomination Assassin’s Creed. True History Of The Kelly Gang is very raw and quite powerful, it really does not shy away from violence which is good to see especially knowing the topic of the film. It’s very well directed and has a lot of emotion put into it, the movie hits really hard when comes to the writing. It’s very well written with some very dark scenes that truly hit it out of the park, the running time of 2 hours and 4 minutes may seem like a problem at first but trust me when I say that it really is not a problem. It’s one of those movies where you really don’t feel the running time at all. It’s a very engaging movie that drags you into it due to just how interesting it is! This is one I highly recommend!!

Greed tells the story of self-made British billionaire Sir Richard McCreadie, whose retail empire is in crisis. For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion, bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street. But after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicised and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos.

I mean I’ll give the movie this….it’s not as bad as I thought it would be? That still doesn’t make it necessarily “good” I put good in quotation marks because I truly don’t know how I feel about this movie. It feels like the type of movie that wants to tackle a bunch of issues but the stuff it says about said issues everyone and their grandmother already knows. The humor isn’t all that funny, I remember laughing about maybe two times when I watched it. A lot of it heavily relies on dropping names of celebrities, movies and more. Then there’s the movie’s own humor which really doesn’t stick, as far as acting…I guess it’s okay? Nobody really did a terrible job there was just nothing really noteworthy to mention, I really don’t know this movie just kind of exists. It’s not hurting anyone it just happens to be there and that’s all there is to it. If it sounds interesting to you by all means give it a shot but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Bad Trip, Dangerous Lies and 1BR.

Before I start I want to apologize for being very inactive, a lot has been going on and I really need to take a small break. I’m back now and the good news is I did watch a chunk of movies, not just these three so expect more posts soon.

This mix of a scripted buddy comedy road movie and a real hidden camera prank show follows the outrageous misadventures of two buds stuck in a rut who embark on a cross-country road trip to NYC. The storyline sets up shocking real pranks.

Bad Trip Is one of those hidden camera prank movies, I’m not the biggest fan of the genre but there is a lot to like about this movie. First off Eric Andre is really great, you can tell he is very passionate about what he does and it seems like he has a ton of fun while doing it. It’s very refreshing to see something like that, plus there’s a lot of good laughs to get out of from this movie. Yes the movie does have a lot of road trip elements that have been done before, but one can definitely make the argument that it takes those elements and make them it’s own. Which again is refreshing to see as opposed to a lot of other road trip movies that just kind of play it safe and that’s it. It’s a solid movie that gets the job done, I recommend checking this one out!

When a wealthy elderly man dies and unexpectedly leaves his estate to his new caregiver, she’s drawn into a web of deception and murder. If she’s going to survive, she’ll have to question everyone’s motives – even the people she loves.

Garbage with every sense of the word, this is basically a Lifetime movie version of Knives Out. How this even made it on to Netflix is beyond me, this also reminded me of 2019’s Secret Obsession which funnily enough this movie is far worse than Secret Obsession. At least with Secret Obsession you had Brenda Song trying her hardest with such a garbage script, with Dangerous Lies there are no positives about this movie. The acting is so lifeless and just horrendous, not once did I care about anything that was going on. The story is a complete and total mess this felt like three different directors wanted to make a movie they couldn’t come to an agreement what story elements they wanted to use so they just threw everything in the pot. What I mean by this is this movie at times wants to be a drama other times it wants to be a thriller and then other times it wants to be some type of romantic movie. As I said before this movie is a complete and total mess, I genuinely had no idea what was going on after the 20 minute mark mostly because the movie feels like a lot of scenes that weren’t used in other films put together. The writing is horrendous how someone can write this and say “this looks good!” Is beyond me, what else can I really say about this garbage? It’s a horrendous movie that has no business being on Netflix…

Disgrace To Cinema F
Sarah tries to start anew in LA, but her neighbours are not what they seem.

This is going to be short, it’s a very decent horror movie to put on in the background or when your bored. That’s not to say that this movie does have it’s good bits, because it most certainly does. It has a decent atmosphere that’s thrilling enough that you stick around through the movie.

More 2020 Quarantine Movie watches! Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge, The Willoughbys, Sergio, Extraction and Behind You

The champions of Outworld and Earthrealm fight to the death in a brutal tournament that determines the fate of Earth.

This is hands down the best adaption Mortal Kombat has ever gotten, while I do like the first Mortal Kombat movie it’s definitely more of a guilty pleasure. As for Mortal Kombat Annihilation we don’t talk about that one, anyway this movie is actually made by Warner Brothers and takes the Mortal Kombat name and kind of just does it’s own thing with it. I really appreciated the gore the movie put in, the acting scenes were also a very nice welcome as well! The writing was pretty well done, the animation was beautiful and the overall movie was a very fun but at the same time really great experience. It’s one of those video game adaption movies that really gets it right and shows how much care was put into it. The movie also feels like one of those Saturday morning cartoons where you would be really excited to see and I mean that in a very positive way. Because this movie does get you excited to see what happens next! If you are a Mortal Kombat fan I highly recommend giving this one a go!!!

Convinced they’d be better off raising themselves, the Willoughby children hatch a sneaky plan to send their selfish parents on vacation. The siblings then embark on their own high-flying adventure to find the true meaning of family.

I’ll keep this rather short because I really don’t have much to add, The Willoughbys was one of those movies where the longer I thought about it the more I kind of liked it. The animation is beautiful, it’s bouncy, colorful, stylish and so on. It gives the movie it’s own personality and helps it separate it from a lot of other films! The writing was pretty creative at times and the plot was pretty interesting as well. I will say the movie had a rough start and took a bit to get going, but once it did start moving it was at it’s best. It turns itself into something quirky which I really liked, it’s definitely an interesting movie that I would recommend!

A sweeping drama set in the chaotic aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq, where the life of top UN diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello hangs in the balance during the most treacherous mission of his career.

Sergio is a painfully below average movie, outside of Ana De Armas giving a solid performance and a few moments in the film that are actually quite good. It really does not have a lot to offer, a lot of the acting and writing is just okay with nothing really to it at all. A lot of the movie is kind of uninteresting mostly due to the movie jumping forward and backward through time to the point where it will definitely confuse the audience. It also leads me to believe that they honestly had no idea what they wanted to do with this movie, the movie also did not have that extra push to make it stand out among the crowd. A very painfully below average film that I don’t recommend…

Tyler Rake, a fearless black market mercenary, embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.

I still stand by if Chris Hemsworth was not in this movie, the movie would not be getting anywhere near the amount of attention it is getting. The movie itself is one of those action movies that just kind of exists, the positives I can give this movie are Chris Hemsworth giving a good performance, the action scenes are solid and the camerawork is pretty good. The rest of the film ranges from bad to very forgettable. The acting from everyone else feels very wooden, the writing is just not well done and feels very rushed at times. The writing also feels like it’s trying to be something much bigger but ends up being something so small and overall pointless. In fact that’s what I feel about a majority of this movie…pointless, it just feels like one of those action movies that saw what some other action movies were doing and just copied ideas from those movies and hope it sticks. Overall it’s really not worth checking out unless your a huge Chris Hemsworth fan…

Two young sisters find that all the mirrors in their estranged aunt’s house are covered or hidden. When one of them happens upon a mirror in the basement, she unknowingly releases a malicious demon.

I’m not entirely sure why I even bothered with this movie, I guess the concept sounded interesting. But it completely missed it’s mark, the acting felt way too wooden, the writing was just terrible and about what you expect from a terrible horror movie, the pacing made the film feel like it was 2 hours long. The movie itself is pretty much any given horror movie you have seen, if you have at least seen one horror movie in your life then you can just skip this. It does nothing new for the genre at all…

What’s been going on with the Worst and Best films of the decade lists?

Let me be clear and say they are still happening….just not in the way people think. For one thing each movie WILL NOT be receiving their own individual post, that would take way too long and would become tiring. What’s most likely gonna end up happening is each post is going to have about 10-25 per post with a few comments thrown in, the top 50 will most likely get longer comments.

The best list will definitely take much longer then the worst list but I’m hoping it will be worth it in the end!

With that said I do have some reviews coming either today or tomorrow so sit tight!

2020 Quarantine Watch (TigerTail, Trolls World Tour, Wendy and Butt Boy)

A Taiwanese factory worker leaves his homeland to seek opportunity in America, where he struggles to find connection while balancing family and newfound responsibilities in this multi-generational drama.

TigerTail is a beautiful story about following your own path and making decisions that you may not want to do but sometimes it’s for the best. Alan Yang puts his heart and soul into this film and it clearly shows, from a lot of top notch performances to beautiful and very powerful writing. Yang’s direction is definitely the best thing about this film, he really shows the emotions and struggles each of the characters go through. Which are very raw each of the characters have their own unique personality and feel like human beings who have flaws, the story itself is very beautiful and just overall very well done. Please go give this one a watch!!

9/10 A

When the Queen of the Hard Rock Trolls tries to take over all the Troll kingdoms, Queen Poppy and her friends try different ways to save all the Trolls.

Trolls World Tour was definitely a surprise, I absolutely hated the first movie. It felt like almost every animated movie released at the time, while yes this movie does feel like that as well at least Trolls World Tour has much more going for it. What I really respect about this movie is the message, it takes the topic of diversity and cleverly implements it into music genres. The covers of many of the songs were actually quite great which is something I was very surprised about, the cast seemed like they had a blast with this movie which is also great to see. The movie does feel formulaic which doesn’t really help the movie in the long run, but at least the movie is not painful. It’s a charming little movie that gets the job done, will I ever watch this movie again? Probably not but it definitely is a good watch!!

Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.

Look I respect Benh Zeitlin and his attempt with this movie, but the movie itself is just not good. I thought the acting was fine enough and the filming was pretty great, a matter of fact visually this movie is pretty great. However the writing is a completely other story, the incoherent writing really destroys this movie. It’s a complete mess and feels like they rushed through certain scenes to get it finished, my biggest problem with this movie is that there is a good movie somewhere in this mess. It’s desperately trying to get out but it’s squeezed in between messy writing and horrible pacing, as I said before I respect what they were trying to do with this movie, however the movie itself should be skipped.

Detective Fox loves work and alcohol. After going to AA, his sponsor, Chip, becomes the main suspect in his investigation of a missing kid. Fox also starts to believe that people are disappearing up Chip’s butt.

I wasn’t entirely sure if I was going to give this
one a full review at first. The movie has it’s bizarre ideas and some are actually pretty good, the movie itself definitely could have benefited with a bigger budget and better writing. It has a lot of fun moments that I found myself enjoying and laughing at, but in terms of filmmaking it’s just okay. It’s on the border of being okay and being a little below average. It’s kind of hard to go into detail without spoiling and for the people who want to see it I won’t do that for you.

2020 Movie Lighting Round : Vivarium, Blush, We Summon The Darkness and The Roads Not Taken!

A young couple looking for the perfect home find themselves trapped in a mysterious labyrinth-like neighborhood of identical houses.

I actually found Lorcan Finnegan’s previous film “Without Name” to be a decent movie, this was definitely a step down. I will say this the concept I thought was interesting, what rips this movie to shreds is the horrendous pacing, it feels like a very long TV episode and the movie itself is only 97 minutes long. Jesse Eisenberg gives an okay performance but it’s really not something to write home about. Actually the same can be said for pretty much all the performances nothing was very memorable, the writing is the exact same way it’s not bad but there was a lot more to be desired. The best thing I can say about this movie is the filming is genuinely great, it’s very detailed and does have some pretty cool shots. Otherwise this is one of those movies where it could have been something really great, but it just didn’t hit the mark.

5/10 C

The sexual, psychological, and moral unraveling of an obsessive-compulsive suburban mom.

I really don’t have much to say about this one, it’s the type of movie where you finish watching it and just kind of shrug your shoulders and then put something else on. In terms of acting and writing it’s fine, there really isn’t anything necessarily bad in the film a lot of it is just below average and the second half of the movie is nowhere near as interesting as the first half of the film. If it sounds like something you would be interested in by all means check it out, otherwise skip this one.

5/10 C

Three best friends embark on a road trip to a heavy-metal show, where they bond with three aspiring musicians and head off to one of the girls’ country home for an after-party.

This is basically Satanic Panic (which I didn’t like) except the plot is tweaked a bit, I get the movie was supposed to be some type of 80’s throw back to some slasher films. But it really is just an okay movie when you turn off your brain, otherwise it doesn’t really do anything that hasn’t been done before. Sure it does have it’s fun moments but it really doesn’t have anything noteworthy. The acting is fine enough, the writing is very poor at times, it’s very hard to believe this came from the same director who did “My Friend Dahmer”

4/10 D+
Sally Potter’s film follows a day in the life of Leo (Javier Bardem) and his daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning), as he floats through alternate lives he could have lived, leading Molly to wrestle with her own path as she considers her future.

What happened here? There was so much talent involved with this movie and it seemed very promising. The only positive I can give this movie is Elle Fanning and Javier Bardem both of which give the best performance they could with a complete mess of a script. It’s worth noting that Sally Potter directed this which she directed “Ginger & Rosa” which was a pretty good film. Anyway on to what’s wrong with this movie….it’s a complete and total mess, the writing is all over the place and feels like it wants to change the focus of the movie every 2.5 seconds. It pains me to say this movie is terrible because the plot seems very meaningful and something worth talking about, however the way it’s done is just so manipulative and horribly done. The movie just throws it’s audience into situations and just expects them to soak this all in, some movies in the past have done the exact same thing but much better. Here it feels like pure manipulation, as far as other problems with the movie…the pacing is terrible what’s even worse is it takes awhile for something interesting to happen! Overall this was a huge missed opportunity, I recommend giving this a pass!

Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020)

A pair of teenage girls in rural Pennsylvania travel to New York City to seek out medical help after an unintended pregnancy.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always is truly something special, it’s a look at someone’s life who even though is fictional can be an actual person. The film is very raw with a ton of talent in the film director Eliza Hittman (Beach Rats) hits it out of the park here, she really shows the emotion and the journey the main character Autumn goes through. The acting is very raw to the point where the characters feel very real, the same can be said about the writing. It doesn’t even feel like writing it feels very natural and doesn’t feel forced or manufactured. Sidney Flanigan has her debut role in this film, she’s absolutely incredible I can definitely see her getting so much work after this film. Her performance is hands down the best performance I’ve seen in quite sometime! The film itself is very powerful while it is depressing at times it’s for a good reason and considering the subject matter that can be extremely hard to talk about it makes a lot of sense. As I said before the film feels very real, everything that goes on can very well happen to someone, overall Never Rarely Sometimes Always is an incredible film that I highly recommend taking a look at. You will not be disappointed.

Bloodshot (2020)

After he and his wife are murdered, marine Ray Garrison is resurrected by a team of scientists. Enhanced with nanotechnology, he becomes a superhuman, biotech killing machine – Bloodshot. As Ray first trains with fellow super-soldiers, he cannot recall anything from his former life. But when his memories flood back and he remembers the man that killed both him and his wife, he breaks out of the facility to get revenge, only to discover that there’s more to the conspiracy than he thought.

Bloodshot is about as lame and horrendous as a action film can get, it doesn’t help that Jeff Wadlow or all people was one of the screenwriters (director of Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island.) Vin Diesel seems like a very nice guy and I’m sure he is, but my god he just can’t act, outside of a few performances. But this happens to be one of his worst, his character shows absolutely no emotion even when some scenes are supposed to be sad or shocking he always has this one emotion and that’s it. Combine that with the horrendous direction that pretty much says “who gives a crap” and you have a long painful experience in your hands, the writing is just horrible and feels like a stock action movie that doesn’t do anything new for the genre. None of the characters are likable like at all, none of them have any amount of character development, the only thing I can actually say that was okay about this movie was the action scenes and that’s pretty much it. Some of them were actually kind of fun for what they were, but then you get a very drawn out story that’s just not interesting at the slightest. The movie feels like it’s trying to do way too many things at once but completely fails at all of them, maybe if this movie had better writers, a better director and better vision this could have been decent.

The Main Event and Love Wedding Repeat (2020)

After discovering a magical mask, an 11-year-old aspiring wrestler enters a competition to become the next WWE superstar.

Last year we had Fighting For My Family which was a fantastic film and was one of the biggest surprises of last year, we go from that to this movie…this is an example of what NOT to do when making a WWE film. I understand the target audience was mostly for kids who are fans of WWE but that doesn’t justify it being really bad. The movie is extremely formulaic it’s not even funny the movie pretty much goes like this kid wants to be something when he grows up in this case a wrestler, kid discovers item/way he can do just that right now, kid does said thing and starts becoming famous. Kid let’s fame go to his head and starts ditching his friends, the whole climax is a redemption arc and the kid faces the big end situation in this case battle. If you have seen any movie like that I just described congratulations you have already seen this movie. There are some funny bits here and there but that doesn’t help the movie at all, the acting and writing are terrible and as I said the story has been done to death numerous times, overall it’s another disposal Netflix movie that should be avoided.

While trying to make his sister’s wedding day go smoothly, Jack finds himself juggling an angry ex-girlfriend, an uninvited guest with a secret, a misplaced sleep sedative, and the girl that got away in alternate versions of the same day.

What is there even to comment on? Netflix has done this type of movie before the whole deja vu element they have used in the film “Naked” at least with “Naked” it didn’t take itself seriously sure it wasn’t good but it was very harmless. With this movie it takes itself pretty seriously and it feels like a chore to get through, outside of the acting which does have a talented cast especially Olivia Munn (who for whatever reason is in this movie) I seriously can’t think of anything else in this movie I really liked. The major problem with this movie was the writing, it was very cliched and very uninspired I’m not saying the writing should have been Oscar worthy but it most certainly should not have been what we were given. Plus the movie itself is just not interesting, it feels very poorly put together and doesn’t really know where it wants to go towards the end. Give this one a pass..
