The Other Lamb and Porno (2020)

A girl born into an all-female cult led by a man in their compound begins to question his teachings and her own reality.

The Other Lamb has great costume design and fantastic cinematography, but otherwise it’s another horror movie that feels like a missed opportunity. I think this film would have largely benefited if it was a short film, the acting and writing is fine enough but it’s nowhere near as strong as it wants to be, having that said it’s not a bad film by any means. It’s just one of those movies I would never watch again, I can appreciate what they were trying to go for with this movie but it ultimately does very little.

When five teen employees at the local movie theater in a small Christian town discover a mysterious old film hidden in its basement, they unleash an alluring succubus who gives them a sex education…written in blood.

I’m actually pretty disappointed with this one, on paper it sounds like a little movie that could be fun. But unfortunately what does it in is it just doesn’t deliver. Sure there are some good bits here and there with some of the body horror, but almost everything else is either terrible or not very interesting. The acting, writing and even the way the movie is formatted is pretty terrible. It feels like a movie that had ideas but just did not know how to use them properly, I can definitely see why someone would have fun with this movie it’s just not for me.

The Way Back (2020)

Jack Cunningham was an HS basketball phenom who walked away from the game, forfeiting his future. Years later, when he reluctantly accepts a coaching job at his alma mater, he may get one last shot at redemption.

This is definitely a much different type of role the what Ben Affleck usually does. Which is something I do like to see, it shows that actors or actresses aren’t afraid of getting out of their comfort zone. The performances all around were pretty great, especially from Ben Affleck they felt very raw and at times pretty powerful as well, the same can be said with the writing it has a nice raw feeling to it that really sucks you into the movie which I appreciated. Gavin O’Connor does a fantastic job with his direction it brings a lot of strength to the film and gives us a realistic view of a coach wanting what’s best for the team he’s coaching. Notice how I’ve used the word “raw” a lot in this review because that’s the best way to describe it, almost everything feels very raw about it. Which does lead to some very powerful performances from everyone involved! This is one I recommend!!

Inside The Rain (2020)

Facing expulsion from college over a misunderstanding, a bipolar student indulges his misery at a strip club where he befriends a gorgeous, intelligent, outrageous woman and they hatch a madcap scheme to prove his innocence.

What makes me respect Inside The Rain is Director Aaron Fisher does In fact have bipolar disorder which he wanted to make this film based on his experience with the disorder. The movie is a very honest film that has a lot of great moments, it has some really great humor thrown in there as well. The bits with Rosie Perez are really great, the acting does have a few missteps from a few people but for the most part it’s quite great! The writing is pretty decent and leads to some funny and some strong moments, some parts do feel a bit formulaic especially the ending. But the movie is forgiven due to just how charming it really is and it makes sure the audience connects with the main character. Definitely something worth watching!!

Coffee & Kareem (2020)

Twelve-year-old Kareem Manning hires a criminal to scare his mom’s new boyfriend -police officer James Coffee – but it backfires, forcing Coffee and Kareem to team up in order to save themselves from Detroit’s most ruthless drug kingpin.

First and foremost I feel incredibly sorry for Terrance Little Gardenhigh, this movie gave him such a garbage script to work with to the point where you just feel really really bad. This movie is an absolute waste of time and shows how low Netflix Original movies are willing to sink, this movie came from Michael Dowse who directed Stuber and What If. The acting is complete bull crap from Ed Helms desperately trying to be funny to the point where it’s a flat out embarrassment, to Taraji P. Henson completely being wasted in the cast. The jokes are horrendous a lot of it heavily relies on unfunny twitter humor, it’s the type of humor where if you go on twitter and you see a serious or unfunny tweets and for whatever reason people find it hysterical. Then a lot of it is “hey we said a curse word please laugh” type humor which is the lowest I feel a comedy can go for, the story itself has been told 40 different times and in much better ways, I really have no idea what else to say…this movie has been done before several times but this happens to be one of the worst attempts…

I Still Believe (2020)

The true-life story of Christian music star Jeremy Camp and his journey of love and loss that looks to prove there is always hope.

The Erwin brothers are back they have previously directed “I Can Only Imagine” which was a surprisingly good film that you do not see often with these Christian movies. While I Still Believe isn’t horrendous it’s still not good, I will say I did like Britt Robertson I thought she was the stand out from everyone else. Some of the songs are actually not too bad either, very decently sung and the song sequences are pretty well done too. That’s where it ends for me, now I do realize this is based on a true story, which I did look up and well this is another case of reading the story will give you much more than the movie. The pacing is really odd at times it goes quickly and then other times it’s slow as a snail, which does not help the movie at all especially with a runtime that’s nearly 2 hours (why is this movie 116 minutes long?) plus I’m not going to sugarcoat it this movie does feel like another version of A Star Is Born. The writing wasn’t necessarily bad it was just very very basic, it’s the type of writing where you can almost predict what everyone is going to say. I really don’t have much more to add, the movie means well but it’s not something I would recommend to someone unless Christian movies are your thing.

The Platform and Saint Frances

A vertical prison with one cell per level. Two people per cell. One only food platform and two minutes per day to feed from up to down. An endless nightmare trapped in The Hole.

The Platform is an example of a solid movie ruined by a very sloppy and rushed ending but I’ll get to that, first off I’ll say what I liked! Well for starters I thought the acting was very solid, combine that with some very decent writing (at least with the first two acts) and you got yourself a pretty interesting story! Speaking of which the story itself was a very interesting premise that they did really good job with for the first two acts! The cinematography was definitely my favorite thing about this movie it was very detailed and showed the setting in a very dark way which I liked! I really wish the third act kept up with all of this but unfortunately it doesn’t, when you compare all three acts side by side. You can easily see how much better the first two acts are from the third one. The third act was just not written as well, wasn’t as engaging and went for a more cliched route. The ending felt like something that was thought of at the very last second, it was very rushed and didn’t do the movie any service at all. Which is a huge shame, if you can get by the ending you might enjoy this one for the most part. I do think it’s still a solid movie, just one that has a lot of flaws.

After an accidental pregnancy turned abortion, a deadbeat nanny finds an unlikely friendship with the six-year old she’s charged with protecting.

Saint Frances was a very interesting one, it’s a very positive movie that is both charming and heartwarming but at the same time it talks about modern families and does tackle some heavy subjects such as abortion. I thought in terms of acting everyone did a very solid job especially Kelly O’Sullivan and Ramona Edith Williams both of them seemed like they had a lot of fun with their roles which is always a good thing to see. The writing is some really solid stuff, it’s heartwarming and also very serious. A lot of movies often have a hard time balancing the two but this movie does that pretty well, if I had one negative against it I do feel at times some scenes do drag out, but the good outmatches the bad quite a lot! Sorry if this review sounded like I was throwing my thoughts on a wall, I really don’t want to give anything away please go and check this one out if you can!

Beneath Us, Resistance and Uncorked (2020)

The American Dream becomes a nightmare for a group of undocumented day laborers hired by a wealthy couple. What they expect to be their biggest payday turns into a terrifying fight for survival. Let me tell you as soon as the trailer hit the web I had a very bad feeling about this movie, but like I always say “I want to be surprised and maybe this will be good!” It definitely wasn’t that…anyway this is basically a discount Get Out, which is why there really isn’t much to be said here but I’ll try. First off the acting is just horrendous it gets way too cartoonish especially from antagonists, like there are moments in this movie that get way too silly. The writing is just straight up garbage that’s all there is to it, I can understand what they were trying to go for but between some horrible acting and direction it just doesn’t land it’s mark. The movie also tries to do a lot of what Get Out did the difference here is, Get Out was smart and you know had characters that had actual development and could be analyzed. The problem with Beneath Us is it doesn’t have that, the movie throws you into the story and just shows the characters none of them have any real development and they all just feel like stock characters. It feels like it’s almost trying to be a parody of Get Out, even If Get Out didn’t exist this movie would still fall flat due to the horrible direction, acting and writing.

The story of a group of Jewish Boy Scouts who worked with the French Resistance to save the lives of ten thousand orphans during World War II. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, it pains me to say movies like this are bad. Because they do mean well and they do have good messages. However when you read the actual true events of this movie which were incredible (I highly recommend looking up the story of Marcel Mangel) and then watch this movie you can easily see that this movie could have been A LOT better. First off….was no other actor available? Look I like Jesse Eisenberg but he just did not fit this role at all, maybe it’s because at this point in his career a majority of his roles have been some nerdy or geek type role. I mean for what his performance was it wasn’t necessarily bad it was just very weird. The writing I was pretty disappointed with, sure there were moments where I thought they did a decent job, but it felt very stale for the most part. The writing also felt very weak, which is not what it should feel like when you are doing a movie like this…The filming was quite good that’s probably the best thing I can say about this movie, It’s one of those movies where you want to like it really really badly but the flaws stick out like a sore thumb and just can’t be ignored. Overall it isn’t the worst thing out there but again it’s one of those movies where looking up information online about the real event is probably a much more interesting thing to do.

Elijah must balance his dream of becoming a master sommelier with his father’s expectations that he carry on the family’s Memphis BBQ joint.
Introducing one of the most “whatever” films of the year, I understand this movie has a good message and I definitely respect that. However it really doesn’t enough to back itself up, the acting is fine as well as the writing for the first two acts, it’s nothing mind blowing or nothing that hasn’t been done before but it’s serviceable…that is until the third act. I’m not exactly sure what happened here but the third act feels like it was made by a completely different director, the pacing is even worse then it was in the first two acts, the acting and writing were nowhere near as good and it was just a very weak ending. I feel like something that didn’t help the movie was the pacing, it was way too slow for it’s own good which is a shame, because this could have honestly been much better.

The Invisible Man (2020)

When Cecilia’s abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

I’m sorry for the wait on this review, I saw this the Wednesday in theaters before everyone was told to stay in your homes due to the coronavirus, anyway on to the review. Leigh Whannell continues to impress as a director, Insidious Chapter 3 I actually liked, Upgrade was a fantastic film and now Invisible Man which…it’s definitely a one of a kind experience. First off Elisabeth Moss has always been a great actress and it really shows here, her performances is hands down my favorite of the year so far, she brings so much power, depth and emotion into her role. It also comes off as very very raw which for a movie like The Invisible Man that is truly something special, the writing was down to earth and quite well done. It leads to a lot of serious scenes that are trigging which leads me to my next point that the scenes that have a lot to do with PTSD are fantastic, Whannell seriously did his homework in that department. It didn’t come off as tasteless, it felt very real and handled very very well. The movie is extremely thrilling throughout the film, it keeps you on the edge of your seat making you wonder what’s going to happen next. The kills are quite great and honestly some of the best I’ve seen in a movie in quite some time, the atmosphere of the movie is haunting. It really adds to the movie and makes it even more creepy it’s a wild ride that you never want to end, it’s also worth saying The Invisible Man is one of the most beautiful looking horror movies out there right now, overall The Invisible Man is hands down my favorite film of the year, it does everything a good horror movie should do and is one of those horror movies where if the term “horror” is used I would think of this film immediately! I highly recommend giving this one a watch if you haven’t already!

The Hunt (2020)

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen – for a very specific purpose – The Hunt.

The Hunt was a movie I was very excited for since last year, as a matter of fact it was supposed to come out last year. But was delayed due to the Dayton and El Paso mass shootings in early August of 2019 at least that’s what Universal said (which is definitely understandable) but a lot of other people say it’s because some people spread some misinformation about this movie being about liberals killing conservatives. Which none of the people working on this film have ever said it was about that. Most of the time it would result in fake articles, the director himself Craig Zobel (Director of Compliance) and producer Damon Lindelof have said it’s a satire on the profound political divide between the right and left. Now with all that said is this movie actually good…..nope, I’ll start with what I liked the saving grace of this movie is Betty Gilpin she definitely did her best with such a weak script that should have been so much better. I thought the filming was actually pretty okay and the final act action scene was actually not too bad, it was decently done and entertaining, finally the kills are actually pretty great some are definitely better than others. Everything else I just didn’t like, as I said before the acting from everyone else was bad. While it might not have been painfully bad it was the type of bad that was just very very dull, also I feel like this needs to be said but if you are a Emma Roberts fan and that’s the only reason why you are going to watch this movie. I highly recommend NOT watching this movie because she’s in the movie for less than 5 minutes, anyway back on track. The writing should have been so much better than it was, the satire part which included terms like “snowflake” feels like the writers read some twitter comments and thought that was a good idea to put into a movie script. It’s just not funny at all maybe outside of one or two moments that got a chuckle out of me, this also feels like one of those movies where it thinks it’s smart but in reality it’s saying things that have been said numerous times or just common sense. My biggest issue with this movie however is it feels like a mess, the development for the event “The Hunt” itself just is not there at all, it just throws you in expecting you to just accept it. Overall The Hunt might not be horrendous but it is a huge missed opportunity that really should have been a lot better.

Lost Girls (2020)

When Mari Gilbert’s daughter disappears, police inaction drives her own investigation into the gated Long Island community where Shannan was last seen. Her search brings attention to over a dozen murdered sex workers.

Something that some people may not know about me is that I love criminal investigation, especially cold case mysteries. Which this movie happens to be about one of the most notorious The Long Island Serial Killer, who has killed 10-16. This movie is about one of the victim’s (Shannon Gilbert) mother launching her personal investigation. This movie has a lot to say about the cases and definitely points the finger at one particular person who definitely should have been looked at more carefully but for some reason wasn’t. In terms of filmmaking this movie is quite great. The cinematography is really well done and has a lot of detail, Amy Ryan as Mari Gilbert does a fantastic job she brings a lot of power to her role which is quite fantastic. The writing is very well done and definitely draws the viewer in, if there’s one thing I do have against the movie is that I do feel the pacing does feel a little too fast at times. But the good outmatches the bad with this movie, it’s a fantastic watch and definitely an interesting watch especially if you are interested in The Long Island Serial Killer case itself!
