Magic Camp (2020)

Andy, at the urging of his former mentor and Magic Camp owner Roy Preston, returns as a counselor to the camp of his youth hoping to reignite his career.

Mark Waters continues down a terrible path, it’s unbelievable that he is the same guy who directed Mean Girls and Freaky Friday (2003) lately he’s been struggling to make a good film Vampire Academy, Mr Popper’s Penguins, Bad Santa 2 and now this movie are truly awful. Magic Camp is something that would have been on the Disney channel back in the early 2000s, there is absolutely nothing to this movie that tries anything different. It’s a very below average underdog team movie but with a magic theme, the only thing going for this movie is Adam Devine which is strange considering how much I don’t like him. But here he is actually giving it his all, the rest of the movie is filled with terrible jokes that aren’t funny, poor acting and way too many predictable moments. It’s worth noting that this movie was shot back in 2017 this was back when Josie Totah didn’t come out as transgender (who has since come out) something that really did not age well at all was Jeffrey Tambor..who in 2017 was accused of sexual harassment and verbal abuse (which explains why it took so long for this to release). Making a lot of scenes in this movie extremely awkward, the direction of the movie is very uninspired it really doesn’t have any identity to it. Magic Camp could easily be mistaken for some other underdog team movie Disney has done, if you have seen any other underdog team movie you have already seen Magic Camp. I really don’t know what else to say, it’s a terrible movie that nobody is going to remember by the end of the month.

Deathstroke Knights & Dragons (2020)

The assassin Deathstroke tries to save his family from the wrath of H.I.V.E. and the murderous Jackal.

Solid enough DC animated movie, Deathstroke is one of my favorite characters and I’m pretty happy with the end result. While the animation isn’t that great and the final act does fall apart, the rest of the movie is a lot of fun. There’s plenty of gore for people hoping there are some great kills, the action scenes are very strong and actually have some great detail to them. It’s pretty fast paced and gets to the point rather quickly which is very refreshing to see, I do wish the movie built more development on some of the other characters, there’s a lot of characters who are just there and never get seen again. A major thing this movie benefits from is how it looks like a comic book and that really is it’s strong point. Overall a very solid movie that I recommend giving a watch.

Blade The Iron Cross (2020)

In 1945 a psychic war journalist gains a telekinetic link to a murderous puppet and uses its help to sabotage a top secret Nazi experiment that involves using a Death Ray to transform people into zombies.

I’m not going to waste too much energy on this movie because at this point this series is just doing the same thing over and over again. Blade The Iron Cross is a spin-off of the Puppet Master Series and is the 14th movie of the series. It’s a sequel to the Axis trilogy (garbage films) first off the acting is complete garbage, the same can be said with the writing. I genuinely don’t know how anyone thought what was written down was a good idea, it doesn’t help that it takes way too long for something to actually happen and when something does happen it wasn’t worth sitting around for. Blade himself is barely in the film, sure he does do a few things but it’s mostly stock horror movie characters acting ridiculous until the movie ends. It’s also the same exact thing as a lot of the other movies in the series, only that this one focuses on Blade. Which I will say the only thing I can give this movie is Blade’s design…But overall the movie is a huge waste of time, I truly hope this is the end of this terrible franchise.

Sputnik, Before The Fire and Endless (2020)

The lone survivor of an enigmatic spaceship incident hasn’t returned back home alone-hiding inside his body is a dangerous creature.

Sputnik kind of just feels like Alien and Life mixed together but with a different setting. The acting was overall pretty strong as well as the atmosphere that was pretty thrilling at times. My major issues with the movie was the creature’s design and the writing, the design was very basic and kind of just felt like a afterthought. Which is definitely not a good thing because it does take away some of the scares away from this movie, as for the writing it’s not that it was necessarily bad it’s that it was just way too basic. It really doesn’t bring any new ideas to the table and just kind of does what other movies like Sputnik have done before. With that said Sputnik is definitely not a bad movie, there’s a lot to like about it. It just could have been so much more..

When a global pandemic forces a TV actress to escape to her rural hometown, an intruder from her past proves as dangerous as the encroaching virus.

I feel like the biggest problem with Before The Fire is that it does the bare minimum when it comes to it’s plot, it’s supposed to be a pandemic with a deadly virus but really don’t get much of that. Instead you get some very poorly developed characters having drama between one another, there’s moments where the acting isn’t too bad. But a lot of the time it feels like nobody really cared, the writing really doesn’t do much for the film either. As I said it does then are minimum sure the characters mention the virus but they don’t really show much or try to build up to it. It’s just kind of like “hey virus is happening” okay so what do you want the audience to do with that information? Had this been much better written I feel like this could have been so much better.

When madly in love high school graduates Riley and Chris are separated by a tragic car accident, Riley blames herself for her boyfriend’s death while Chris is stranded in limbo. Miraculously, the two find a way to connect.

This is basically a young adult version of “Ghost” and it’s a bad one. At first it may not seem too bad the performances are fine enough and there are actually some pretty okay moments especially towards the end. The problem is a lot of it is just not interesting, the pacing is very awkward at times. At one point the movie is slow but then towards the end which as much as I liked some of the moments during the last act it still feels like they needed to find a way to end this movie so they just rushed through it to get it done. It doesn’t help that a lot of it just typical YA movie elements that have been done to death numerous times. If you have already seen “Ghost” you have seen this movie, with that said I can’t say the movie is horrendous because I have definitely seen worse plus as I said before when it comes to acting it’s pretty decent combined with some really great moments. But I can say this is a movie everyone will forget about as soon as the movie is over.

She Dies Tomorrow (2020)

A woman’s conviction that she will die tomorrow spreads like a contagion through a town.

She Dies Tomorrow is one of the most depressing and anxiety driven films I’ve seen in quite awhile, the movie blends several horrifying aspects together. Fear which is what Amy played by Kate Lyn Sheil has, the fear of dying and convinced she will. The movie starts out extremely slow showing in great detail all of the disturbing elements of Amy’s fear of dying, over the course of the film that fear spreads throughout the town and causes a lot of dread and terrifying results to happen. She Dies Tomorrow is an interesting look at someone’s fear and how it can greatly affect someone, plus it shows how quickly anything can be spread and people will believe it whether it’s about someone or themselves. You see how the fear is spread and how it affects each person differently. The acting and writing are both top notch, they are both masterfully done and are both very raw. The writing adds a sense of realism due to how raw (as I said before) it feels, which results in a lot of horrifying moments. Director Amy Seimetz does a wonderful job, she masterfully creates a atmosphere that is haunting and very dark, combine that with the cinematography and the editing and you have yourself a fantastic film. I won’t say much more, check this one out if you can!!

La Llorona (2020)

An aging paranoid dictator, protected by an witchcrafting wife, faces death and the uprise of his people in Guatemala.

One thing about this movie I’m going to be very clear about is if you are going in expecting it to be a full on horror movie. You are going to be very disappointed, La Llorona is more of how the legend came to be there’s also a lot of social and political commentary in the film such as mass genocides, dictators, the military and more. The acting in the film is very solid and quite powerful, it leads to some pretty strong moments that really turn this movie into something more then it is. The same can be said for the writing it feels very raw and captures the horror of the topics this movie talks about it’s some really effective stuff. The true horror of this movie is the topics this movie talks about, it questions what’s horror and what isn’t and it does it in a way that’s really special. It’s also very well put together with fantastic cinematography, excellent editing and beautiful direction this movie turns out to be a strong result. I won’t say too much more because I could end up giving away important details, the less you know about this film the better..check this one out!

An American Pickle (2020)

An immigrant worker at a pickle factory is accidentally preserved for 100 years and wakes up in modern day Brooklyn.

An American Pickle takes an outrageous concept and manages to turn into a smart little movie, Seth Rogan plays two different characters in the film one being Hershel a Jewish immigrant who ends up being brined in a jar of pickles for 100 years and the other being Ben the common person in 2020 or what’s supposed to represent someone from 2020. The accent for Hershel is really impressive and is very believable, the humor in the film is quite great it has a ton of moments that are genuinely funny. The writing is actually quite clever there is some satirical elements such as pointing out how the media will be on your side one moment but then turn on you, the direction from Brandon Trost is quite great, he really makes this whole outrageous story seem believable. In fact that’s what I feel makes this movie standout from a lot of other movies so far this year, how the story itself is outrageous but has this believable atmosphere to it, the mix of the feel of the movie and the characters mentioning 2020 issues really blends together very well. This was definitely a different type of Seth Rogan movie that could have easily went wrong but that’s not the case here! Check this one out!!

The Tax Collector (2020)

A “tax collector” working for a local crime lord finds his family’s safety compromised when the rival of his boss shows up in L.A. and upends the business.

David Ayer is a director who once had a lot of promise, both End Of Watch and Fury are strong movies in their own ways. After that however is when Ayer went downhill Sabotage was terrible and very forgettable, Suicide Squad was horrendous outside of few things such as the costumes, Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Viola Davis, Bright was terrible and again only had Will Smith going for it. Now we have The Tax Collector which is another garbage film, nothing about this film is original. Every single last thing is taken from any given crime thriller, the movie has no identity at all and fails to separate itself from the rest. It’s the equivalent of one of those straight to DVD crime thrillers that come out every Tuesday, if this more were one of those it wouldn’t be a big deal. However this was a VOD release and release by David Ayer so there is no excuse for this movie to look this terrible, the acting is horrendous at first I thought Shia LaBeouf wasn’t bad. But then I thought about how much of an amazing year he had last year with Honey Boy and Peanut Butter Falcon, while he may not be the worst in this movie it certainly isn’t something I would call good either. The fact he’s even in this movie sickens me, he’s much more than this garbage. The writing is a disaster it’s nothing but poorly put together garbage, there’s absolutely nothing in the movie that makes this interesting. It’s some of the most basic uninteresting garbage I’ve seen so far this year, it’s the equivalent of some sort of drink that has nothing in it at all, the movie treats the viewer like they are stupid with a unoriginal plot, horrible acting, writing that should have been looked over and much more. Lastly there’s the direction which comes off as one of those movies that thinks it’s intelligent by just saying “it’s about love” when it isn’t even about that a lot of it is misogyny and violence for the sake of violence. Overall The Tax Collector is garbage, one of the worst movies to come out of 2020. Skip this at all costs..

Work It and Shifter (2020)

When Quinn Ackerman’s admission to the college of her dreams depends on her performance at a dance competition, she forms a ragtag group of dancers to take on the best squad in school…now she just needs to learn how to dance.

It really amazes me how the dance movie genre is still alive and well in 2020, earlier this year Feel The Beat was released which was a very decent dance movie. Work It actually surprises me I went in with not very high expectations but found it to be a genuinely good dance movie. That’s mostly due to Sabrina Carpenter and Jordan Fisher both having strong chemistry, plus the acting from them both is actually quite good. In a lot of dance movies the acting is not quite great so this was refreshing to see, the choreography was really great, the song choices I thought were very well done and the scenes that the songs were placed in match the scenes quite well. The biggest surprise was the writing, while yes it isn’t anything groundbreaking It was still solid especially given the fact this was actually written by Allison Peck the writer of Uglydolls. The movie does feel formulaic which isn’t too surprising because this tends to happen in almost every single dance movie, heck even a lot of the Step Up movies are guilty of this. However the build up to the final dance and the result is very solid, if you are a fan of dance movies you will definitely like this one. It’s definitely the closest in terms of quality to the first Step Up out of a lot of these other dance movies that have come out in recent years.

A young woman experiences painful and gruesome side effects after an experiment with time travel goes wrong.

I really don’t know what this was, I get that it was supposed to be a time travel movie. But good lord could have they at least made this movie interesting? The main character is about as interesting as cardboard, the rest of the characters are cliched characters with no personality. The writing is terrible and feels like it gets worse and worse as the movie goes on, speaking of which while the movie does have a few moments that I thought were good ideas, it all ends up being built up to a huge mess. It really feels like nobody knew how to structure a movie so they completely skipped several steps just to get this released.

Host (2020)

Six friends hire a medium to hold a séance over Zoom during lockdown but get far more than they bargain for as things quickly go wrong. When an evil spirit starts invading their homes, they begin to realize they might not survive the night.

Host was something I was definitely not expecting at all, don’t let the running time of 56 minutes fool you. This movie is VERY effective, Host is one of those social media horror movies like Unfriended and it’s sequel. Host immediately starts off with a very mysterious atmosphere that while you do know something is going to happen it still creeps you out, as the movie progresses the atmosphere gets stronger and stronger to the point where it gets terrifying. A lot of this has to do with two major things, first the very raw performances…the performances all feel extremely believable and doesn’t feel scripted at all, combine that with the atmosphere and you get some terrifying results. The second reason the atmosphere gets stronger throughout the film is the realistic approach mostly due to the characters actually using Zoom during quarantine. Which when the whole COVID pandemic first started a lot of people were using Zoom heck some people are still in quarantine and using Zoom! So combine all of that and you get a pretty terrifying film that is very effective in every single way possible, it’s honestly crazy how a 56 minute film can be much more effective then a 2 hour blockbuster…I don’t want to give much else away, see this movie as soon as you can!
