Kristen Stewart becomes Princess Diana in “Spencer” a dreamlike and nightmarish mesmerizing piece!

The marriage between Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the queen’s estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game, but this year, things will be profoundly different.

Spencer might seem like a biographical film on the surface but when you watch the film it truly is a one of a kind experience, Kristen Stewart has evolved so much as an actress, she’s certainly come a long way since Twilight and has always been one of my favorite actresses. Her portrayal of Princess Diana is her best performances and is quite honestly one of the best performances I’ve seen in a film and that’s no exaggeration. She captures every single detail about Princess Diana especially the looks and mannerisms, which add much more power to her role. The writing is absolutely flawless, it goes beyond being a biographical film. The writing becomes hypnotic to the ears, with a dreamlike to state to it while also feeling incredibly raw. Speaking of which you can not convince me that Spencer isn’t part horror, one of the major points of Spencer was to show how Isolated Diana felt from the royal family. Spencer does this in a very nightmarish but fascinating way that gets pretty psychological. The filming combined with the location also feels like a dream mixed with a nightmare, there’s this sense of loneliness you get from Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of Princess Diana. You really understand why she felt isolated and why she wanted out of the royal family, Pablo Larraín’s direction is absolutely fantastic. He brings much fascinating elements to the film such as dreams, sense of loneliness, nightmares and rawness that hits you like a truck. Spencer is a powerful film that’s effective from beginning to end, Kristen Stewart truly deserves Best Actress at the Oscars because this is the type of role you just don’t see anymore. Make sure to watch Spencer because this is truly something special!

Spencer is currently in theaters!

Plan B (2021) Movie Review!

Follows a straight-laced high school student and her slacker best friend who, after a regrettable first sexual encounter, have 24 hours to hunt down a Plan B pill in America’s heartland.

Plan B is one of the biggest surprises so far this year, this is Natalie Morales’s second directed film (first being Language Lessons which I saw back at Sundance it just hasn’t gotten a wide release yet very good movie though!) and let’s just say that Morales is a director to definitely look out for because she does a fantastic job here! Plan B is sort of similar to Unpregnant but does things a little differently, it’s definitely more on the comedic side but at the same time balances the comedy and drama which I thought it did really really well. It also has a lot of Booksmart elements into it which again I thought the movie made it’s own, Kuhoo Verma and Victoria Moroles were both fantastic in their roles! Both have a beautiful chemistry and both gave surprisingly raw performances that you really get invested in, the movie gets more and more bizarre and quite hilarious as it goes on. Resulting in some very memorable moments that really deliver, as I said earlier Plan B is one of those movies that balances comedy and drama which was quite interesting, it does take some time to get going at the beginning but once it does it’s one hell of a fun ride from there! I highly recommend checking out Plan B, it’s definitely going to be one of the most underrated films of 2021!

Plan B is now available on Hulu!

SXSW Review: Violet (2021) (Last SXSW Review!)

A film development executive realizes that “guiding voice” inside her head has been lying to her about everything.

I heard so much about Violet before going into the film and I really have to say I’m quite impressed. Violet is a meaningful film about anxiety and the voice in your head that says “you aren’t good enough” or “nobody likes you” Violet uses this idea in a way that’s very unique and quite clever, it combines some very quick editing with some very striking shots that grab the attention of the viewer. The film itself is incredibly raw and emotional to the point where it punches you in the gut several times, which leads to Olivia Munn’s performance which is easily the best of her whole career. She displays so much talent here and how capable she is as an actress, her character is fully fleshed out and feels like an actual person with so much anxiety. The writing is absolutely perfect as well, once again it captures the natural feel and truly delivers when it comes to making the viewer feel and care for what’s taking place. Overall it’s best to go into Violet knowing as little as possible, I will definitely have a more in depth review once it comes out! But Violet is hands down one of the best films so far this year, please keep this one on your radar!

Malcolm & Marie (2021)

A director and his girlfriend’s relationship is tested after they return home from his movie premiere and await critics’ responses.

Malcolm & Marie was one of my most anticipated films of 2021, I got the chance to see it early and I’m really happy about that because this film truly delivers. I especially got excited when Sam Levinson director of Assassination Nation and Euphoria said that Malcolm & Marie is going to be a lot like the first part of the Euphoria special Trouble Don’t Last Always. In a lot of ways Malcolm & Marie is a lot like that, in Trouble Don’t Last Always Coleman Domingo and Zendaya are both in one location which is a diner and they entire time they talk about their problems mostly tackling drug addiction. Malcolm & Marie has a couple Marie (Zendaya) and John David Washington (Malcolm) talking about a wide range of topics mostly about Malcolm’s film in one location which is there home. So there’s a lot of similarities and let me tell you Sam Levinson’s direction is unbelievable, it’s truly some of the best direction I’ve seen. I can’t put into words how much power Levinson’s direction has, he’s able to take two characters and create a raw, emotional story with them with some very impactful dialogue. The film is also shot entirely in black and white which really gives it a special feel to it, the writing is brutally honest and doesn’t sugarcoat anything. The conversations, disagreements, arguments that both Zendaya and John David Washington both have comes off as very real. The music also helps create the setting and atmosphere, which is no surprise given that the music is done by Labrinth who is also heavily involved in Euphoria. There’s also some very strong song choices that also match the scenes as well! Zendaya gives the performance of her career, she gives such an authentic performance and has tons of dialogue that’s incredibly impactful to the point where you are left speechless. The same can be said for John David Washington, he truly gives it his all and shows how much of a fantastic actor he really is, both Zendaya and John David Washington show a huge range of emotions and of their acting abilities it’s something that you don’t see very often in a lot of films. The film itself also feels like a hybrid of a throwback film to the classic movie era combined with a modern film, the atmosphere really captures all of that in 1 hour and 46 minutes. The parts of the film that focuses on Malcolm’s film really gives off as I said before a classic movie feel, while a lot of the other topics and the mood of the film gives off a modern movie feel. It’s a perfect balance where one doesn’t make the other feel less. Lastly there’s final dialogues where Zendaya gives her absolute best moments throughout the film, she really shows how incredible of an actress she really is and gives some of the most realistic pieces of acting I’ve seen. Overall Malcolm & Marie is a one of a kind experience, it’s something truly can’t be matched. I strongly believe this is going to get Zendaya nominated for best actress, after this performance she will be one of the favorites to win. John David Washington could also score a best actor nomination as well, as I said before he truly gives it his all. Sam Levinson could also get a best director nomination, before seeing the film I wasn’t 100% sure but after seeing the film I truly think he has a strong shot. Finally there’s the film itself while it is going to be a very tough year, Malcolm & Marie feels like one of the most authentic and overall one of the best of the best picture candidates. Malcolm & Marie is a film that a lot of people are going to absolutely love, I highly recommend checking this one out when it comes out February 5th 2021 on Netflix! This is going to be very hard to push off of my list of the top spot of the best film of 2021!

Nomadland (2020) Review!

After losing everything in the Great Recession, a woman embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.

Nomadland is quite honestly one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen, it’s hard to choose where to start when talking about a film such as Nomadland, but let’s cover the basics and work our way up. First off everyone involved in the film did a fantastic job in their roles Frances McDormand gives one of the best performances of 2020 and goes all out. She really shows how incredible of an actress she really is, this just might be my favorite performance from her, mostly due to how real her performance is (which is saying a lot because a lot of her other performances feel the exact same way) with this movie it feels very different. I believe that is due to the whole film feeling very authentic, in the ways of a story it’s actually very straightforward. Frances McDormand goes around meets a bunch of people and repeats, what’s really special about this is Linda May, Charlene Swankie and Bob Welles are real life nomads who play fictionalized versions of themselves. Even though the versions are fictionalized they still very extremely authentic like you are actually seeing actual people rather then actors and actresses. The score, cinematography and setting all blend masterfully together, they all compliment each other and make each scene feel like a beautiful painting that you could look at for hours on end. Chloe Zhao as the director, editor, the screenplay writer and one of the producers is truly magnificent, especially as a director Chloe Zhao once again she likes to go for a very realistic approach and make her films as authentic and human as possible. It’s truly beautiful to see and it’s something you rarely ever see from a director, although Nomadland is based off of a book the film still feels like a very personal film to Chloe Zhao and everyone involved in the film, you completely forget that it’s actually based off of a book. Heck I didn’t even know it was based off of one until I looked up some information on it! Nomadland also has so much heart in it as well, leaving you with a sense of hope and gratitude like you were taken on a small road trip with Frances McDormand and you as the viewer are happy you went on the ride. The simple moments such as the conversations that Frances McDormand has with the other characters feel very powerful, simple conversations such as “how are you?” Just feels perfect it’s as real as a conversation can get, The final scenes are some of the most beautiful and powerful moments in a film I’ve seen, it truly leaves you with wanting more but ends the journey. It’s the type of journey you want to keep going but with most journeys there is a ending but it’s a truly beautiful one that you will never forget going on. Overall Nomadland is a masterful film that Chloe Zhao absolutely nailed, I can see this already winning best picture with Chloe Zhao winning best director and Frances McDormand winning best actress! The absolutely best film of 2020, truly a beautiful film that I highly recommend watching when it comes out February 19th 2021!

“One of the things I love most about this life is that there’s no final goodbye. You know, I’ve met hundreds of people out here and I don’t ever say a final goodbye. I always just say, “I’ll see you down the road.”

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)

Released from prison for bringing shame to his country, Kazakh funnyman Borat risks life and limb when he returns to America with his 15-year-old daughter.

An idea of Borat 2 was always a topic of discussion when it comes to “movie sequels that are bound to happen” it was just a matter of WHEN it would happen. Well given how unpredictable 2020 has been Borat 2 finally became a real thing, it just sort of came out of nowhere too which I do think this helps the movie in the long run. Anyway the film itself is quite hilarious I really haven’t laughed from a film that was a flat out comedy in a good while, Sacha Baron Cohen does a really good job as Borat once again and truly embodies the character. It reminds the viewer of why the first film worked so well, the second film works just as well. Sure there are some differences this movie has more of a plot rather than a Jackass type of style (although there’s plenty of those in the film too) but it really works due to the creativity. It isn’t just one of the same jokes over and over again they manage to tell the jokes in interesting and hilarious ways, Maria Bakalova is definitely going to be a in a lot more roles she was fantastic in her role and was also pretty hilarious! She really went all out in her role and truly put a lot into her character. What I found to be really great about all of this was the movie knew when to balance the jokes and the timing of the jokes, often times jokes in movies tend to go on for way too long or way too short giving the audience barely enough time to digest the joke. However in this movie it balances that out the jokes don’t go on for a long time but give the audience enough time to react and digest the joke in question, as I said before this is something that is hardly seen in a lot of comedies nowadays so it’s very refreshing to see! Overall Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is a very strong sequel, as far as which one is better that is going to be entirely up to the viewer, both films do a few things differently so it’s going to depend on what the viewer prefers. I highly recommend giving this one a watch!!

Taylor Swift : Miss Americana (2020)

A look at iconic pop artist Taylor Swift during a transformational time in her life as she embraces her role as a singer/songwriter and harnesses the full power of her voice.

I can now perfectly understand why this got standing ovations at Sundance 2020, whether you like Taylor Swift’s music or not there is absolutely no denying that she is one of the biggest stars of this generation. While I wouldn’t call myself the biggest fan of her music (I do like a good amount of her songs) I have always liked her as a person, she seems like a genuinely nice person and one of the few celebrities out there that wants to make her fans and everyone happy. The documentary tackles a lot I’ll go over a few things, first there’s the whole Kanye West VMA 2009 thing, only this time around Taylor Swift does add in how she felt about it, sure you could probably guess how she felt in interviews but here it’s much more personal, this time it feels like she’s talking to you/the audience. Oh yeah if there’s another thing this documentary will do it will make you get so angry at the media, some journalists and a few select people. Taylor Swift has always been one of those stars who’s been unfairly attacked and this documentary really showcases what the type of attacks were. The way Taylor Swift describes all of this really grows on you and by the end you really do start feeling bad for her. There’s also Taylor Swift talking about how she was afraid to speak on politics, she wanted to get her voice out there but was afraid of being ridiculed and cancelled like what happened to the Dixie Chicks. This is something that is a very common problem these days people can take something that isn’t even bad to say and will attempt to cancel you for it. Plus to add more fuel to the fire Taylor Swift explains the whole situation with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, she was not liked by a lot of people for absolutely no reason at all (I will never understand why some people took Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s side.) in a lot of ways this documentary is Taylor Swift telling everyone that she isn’t holding back anymore and she’s not going to let people push her around anymore either. Which is a very brave thing to do, sticking up for yourself can be really hard and as I said before you feel what Taylor Swift is going through. As far as the filmmaking itself it’s very well done, from the editing, the many different clips and scenes, plus you have some of her songs in it which were some of my favorites! Overall there really isn’t anything else for me to say it’s a powerful documentary that really shows Taylor Swift is not letting people push her around anymore. I highly recommend giving this one a watch.

Uncut Gems (2019)

A charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score, makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides, in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.

It’s honestly hard to find words for this movie, Uncut Gems is truly something special and really shows the capabilities of what talented directors in this case the Safdie brothers can really do. Good Time was one of absolute favorites of 2017 so when I heard they were directing this film I was pretty excited and it just might be better than Good Time and that is really saying something. First of all I’ll get the obvious out of the way Adam Sandler is pretty fantastic, when you give Sandler a very realistic and strong script he is an entirely different actor. Plus his drama roles are some of his best and this is no exception, Julia Fox also steals the show. Like Sandler Julia Fox gives a raw performance that’s very convincing. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful combine that with the editing and you have yourself a truly well crafted film, the direction from the Safdie brothers is masterful the movie is one of the best directed films of 2019. The atmosphere in the movie is thrilling, it always gives you this feeling of “unknown” like what’s going to happen next or anything could just happen right now! The pacing is so well done I feel like the build up to each scene had it’s own personality in a atmospheric sense, the movie feels very raw it’s almost like it’s documenting someone or a group of people’s lives. It’s one of those movies that doesn’t hold back at all which is something a lot more films should do. Uncut Gems also heavily reminds me of Requiem For A Dream and that is most certainly not a bad thing at all. Overall Uncut Gems is a treasure it really goes all out and shows how incredibly talented everyone involved really is, here’s to hoping Sandler gets nominated for best actor at the Oscars.

Avengers Endgame is a very emotional ending!

After the devastating events of Avengers Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore order to the universe. Before I begin this is a NO SPOILER REVIEW as always. Anyway Endgame is a movie that has been building up for so many years now, it’s something really special and just amazing to see. The movie itself is absolutely incredible, it takes what was so great about a lot of the other films and combines them all into one, the character development is so well done here. It really shows what a lot of the characters have been going through since Infinity War, the acting is really well done especially from Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth and a few others. The writing is also really well done, it was the type of writing that has a lot of emotion to it. Speaking of which this movie does give you a lot of emotions, which is honestly something I have not felt since Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2. The action scenes were absolutely beautiful as well the filming both of them work so well together to the point where you just don’t want them to end. The build up to the final act is also some of the best build up I’ve seen in the MCU even if you just started getting into the MCU, it still makes you care about the characters which is something I have not seen in a lot of movies in a good while now. Thanos still proves to be one of the MCU’s best villains to date, the running time of the movie is absolutely perfect. I was saying this earlier the running time is a lot like the Lord Of The Rings movies you get so into them that you don’t even like it was 3 hours long. Which is what I really find special about this movie, it really gets you into the film and it goes all out with everything it was building up to. This is definitely a one of a kind experience that I absolutely loved, somewhere down the line I will have to make a spoiler review. But for now this is a movie that really masters everything it was going for and hands down one of if not the best of the MCU! Definitely check this one out you won’t regret it!!
