The White Tiger (2021)

The epic journey of a poor Indian driver who must use his wit and cunning to break free from servitude to his rich masters and rise to the top of the heap.

I really did not know what to expect with The White Tiger, for what the movie is it’s definitely not bad but very heavily flawed. I thought the acting was overall pretty good and the direction was solid. Definitely a step up from Ramin Bahrani’s last film the remake of Fahrenheit 451 (2018), in The White Tiger you see Bahrani’s directing abilities much better. However I feel like what kills this movie is how it really tried to be a lot like Parasite but much more comedic, what made Parasite incredible was how it balanced the satirical comedic moments and the serious moments. It was a perfect balance that really captures you into the film, with The White Tiger while yes there are serious moments those happen to be the best parts about it as well. There are a ton of comedic moments that really do not work that well and the movie spends way too much time trying to make these comedic moments work. Plus when you tack on the running time that felt way too long the movie starts to feel like it’s dragging for the sake of it. Despite that The White Tiger is definitely not a bad film, it’s well made and very decently acted as I said before. It’s just not something I’m going to ever look back at unfortunately.

No Man’s Land (2021)

Border vigilante Bill Greer (Frank Grillo) and his son Jackson (Jake Allyn) are on patrol when Jackson accidentally kills a Mexican immigrant boy. Bill tries to take the blame but Texas Ranger Ramirez (George Lopez) sees through the lie, spurring Jackson to flee south on horseback across the Rio Grande to become a gringo “illegal alien” in Mexico. Chased by Texas Rangers and Mexican federales, Jackson journeys across deserts and mountains to seek forgiveness from the dead boy’s vengeful father (Jorge A. Jimenez), as he falls in love with the land he was taught to hate.

Yeah this barely did anything for me, No Man’s Land is by Conor Allyn who previously did Walk.Ride.Rodeo which was a terrible Netflix original, this is definitely an improvement but that doesn’t make it good. Frank Grillo is great as always, he does a decent job with what he’s given. The filming is quite beautiful there are some great shots that capture the beauty of the setting really well. That’s where it ends for me, Jake Allyn is just not interesting enough as an actor to keep you invested into the film, it feels way too long with a running time of 114 minutes but feels like 2 and half hours long. There’s a lot of scenes that could have easily been cut as well, the character development also has a tough time here. While yes there is some of it there really isn’t enough for audiences to get completely invested into the characters. Overall a very forgettable movie, I can easily see why IFC did not advertise this at all.

Top 100 Worst Films Of 2020

So this is a little surprise, I decided to skip Monster Hunter. Why? Because It’s taking way too long for a digital release, plus I seriously don’t want to be overwhelmed with so much stuff to do at the end of February when I’ll have my best list out after I see The Father.

Unfortunately I will not be doing a traditional countdown type list this year where I split the list into parts. As it really does get tiring after awhile, the main reason I’m not doing it this year is because to be quite honest the worst movies of 2020 list is not at all very exciting. A lot of the films are either a boring kind of bad, terrible clones of actual good movies, sequels that feel almost identical to their predecessors and much more. I will give some overall thoughts however!!

I knew from the moment the first trailer for After We Collided showed up online that it was going to take the spot of worst film of 2020 and here we are now! Those of you who are new After was my worst film of 2019 and it wasn’t even close, I can say the exact same here. After We Collided destroyed every other movie at being one of the worst things I’ve ever seen and it wasn’t even close. It doesn’t help that the movie is MUCH worse than After which is really saying something…what’s worse is there’s apparently two more of these films, one of which is supposedly coming out this year.

Some other noteworthy garbage Artemis Fowl is one of the worst things Disney has made and I have no problem saying that, it’s no surprise Disney did their absolute best to completely bury this movie. Fantasy island is the worst horror film of 2020 and shows how much worse Jeff Wadlow is as a director, I didn’t think it could be worse than Truth Or Dare but damn I was wrong.

The Jesus Rolls had no point in existing, it has cast that tricks you into thinking that could be worth your time but in reality it’s not funny, interesting or anything worth looking into. The Murder Of Nicole Brown Simpson is by Daniel Farrands the guy who did Haunting Of Sharon Tate you know that tasteless movie about Sharon Tate’s murder? Well this time he did Nicole Brown Simpson and it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, luckily it seems like he currently isn’t working on anything I hope it stays that way. The rest of the top 10 are terrible in their own different ways, Stardust miserably fails as a biopic, Free Lunch Express feels like a horrendous early 2000s parody movie, Songbird is a movie about COVID-23 (yes COVID-23) that felt like fear mongering and just an overall horrendous movie, The Tax Collector is David Ayer’s worst film and Verotika is just….huh?

There’s a lot of sequels that didn’t need to happen such as another Norm Of The North movie, Family Vacation marks the 4th movie in the franchise. It’s just as bad as the others! Cats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite really came out of nowhere, it’s not as bad as the second movie but it’s still painful to sit through. Kissing Booth 2 was worse than the first movie and unfortunately a third film will be releasing this year.

So that about wraps my final thoughts, 2021 is definitely going to be interesting in terms of movies. Will there be anything that could top After We Collided in terms of being the worst film of the decade so far? We will have to wait and see!

Film Twitter’s Sexual Abuse and Pedophillia Problem.

I – Introduction

This is something I really did not want to talk about, but because of what happened yesterday with three huge names on Film Twitter being exposed of being sexual predators who harassed several women and are just overall down right cruel to women. I felt the need to say something, if it means potentially helping survivors and people who are going through abuse then I will do my part and help out.

Before we get into what happened we need to go over other people who have been exposed which led up to this. But first I’ll catch up the people who don’t know what Film Twitter is. It’s exactly what it sounds like a part of Twitter where people discuss movies, actors, actresses, directors and all of that good stuff.

I am not part of Film Twitter although I do talk about movies, I do not consider myself part of it and quite frankly never will given what happened/what’s happened over the years. I’ve made some friends from Film Twitter who are great people some of which thanked me in advance for making this piece on this topic. Next we are going to discuss all of the people who have been called out that I can remember, unfortunately I’m not going to remember all of them. But by the end you should get a very solid idea of what is going on and realize how common it really is on Film Twitter. So let’s start…

II – Spiro

Spiro was the first person I remember being exposed as a pedophile on Film Twitter, I believe he wasn’t a huge name but he had somewhat of a decent following. He pretended to be a 22 year old man when in reality he was in his 30s messaging girls on Film Twitter who were about 14-16 years old. After being exposed he didn’t even apologize he straight up deleted his account, the DMs came out and the stuff he sent to this one girl was disturbing and disgusting which I won’t repeat here. Spiro is no longer on Twitter thankfully.

III – Caillou Pettis

Caillou Pettis

This was definitely a shocking one and this is the only person who was exposed I actually messaged with. I’ll just summarize what happened with my experience because it’s really not important but it does add a little bit. I started actually using Twitter properly rather then just randomly post things in like 2018. Around the beginning of 2020 when I didn’t have any pictures of myself or have my age in my bio, Caillou Pettis who is actually a film critic on Rotten Tomatoes messaged me, which is fine we exchange thoughts on movies and then he asks me how old I am. I tell him I’m 25 (at the time I’m 26 now) he all of a sudden stops messaging me. Several months later he is exposed as a Pedophile messaging teens on Instagram and Twitter. He gave a very fake apology saying “he didn’t know the people he messaged ages” when DMs show that he was fully aware of their ages. As of right now Caillou Pettis is very inactive on all of his social media accounts even on Rotten Tomatoes.

IV – Joseph Solano (1st Time)

Yes you read that right Joseph has been exposed twice we will get to that later but for now let’s talk about the first time. Joseph Solano use to be a popular person on Film Twitter he would call out racism, sexism and so on he primarily focused on the Star Wars fanbase…which leads into what happened. For whatever reason Joseph thought it was a good idea to pose as a woman to “see if sexism is real” apparently several women told him not to do it, but he did it anyway. He also made a lot of people feel very uncomfortable as well. This leads into something you will see that plays a major theme in the next section. Men who put themselves on pedestals claiming “they are the champions of women and are the only respectful ones towards women because they speak out more than others” it’s a very toxic mindset and actually a quite hypocritical one as well. Joseph is one of those who used this logic and thought he wouldn’t be called out because he’s against abuse of women although he himself sexual harasses women. Joseph is still on Twitter surprisingly enough but that will probably change very soon.

V – Haydn, John Eberle Jr and Joseph Solano (2nd Time)

Finally we come to what took place yesterday which is what angered me to make this piece, you might be asking “after the instances you just described before why not say anything before?” which is a fair question, but it boils down to that I wanted to believe Film Twitter would fight back against this garbage, I truly wanted to believe people would look at what happened and say “we need to do something about this” sadly that is not what happened. With that said let’s talk about these three, last night a few brave young women came forward and told their experiences about Haydn, John and Joseph. Haydn was the first to be called out, someone who had a huge following on Film Twitter and like Joseph was supposedly against abuse and harassment towards women. Haydn sexual abused and harassed several women, used the “I’m lonely” defense as a way for people to feel sorry for him and he took advantage of his popularity on Film Twitter and manipulated people to not come forward. Some survivors even said they were afraid to speak out due to his popularity on Film Twitter. So it sounds like to me Haydn damn well thought he could get away with everything.

Next John was exposed arguably one of the biggest names on Film Twitter, like Haydn and Joseph he had the “champion of women/nice guy” mindset, John did almost the exact same disgusting crap Haydn did…sexually harass women, abuse women with very tasteless jokes when told to stop, he flirted with several women when told to stop he wouldn’t. John also took advantage of his popularity on Film Twitter he set up this nice guy personality where if anyone were to expose him they would be labeled “Cancel Culture” I would also argue John put himself on a much higher pedestal than Haydn or Joseph, he started that whole “Positivity Gang” garbage that really did not mean anything apparently it was a way to “combat against racism, sexism and sexual abuse” but each of these three who were all part of it are complete hypocrites.

Finally on to Joseph (again) he did a lot of the same things John and Haydn did but he also made a lot of sexual jokes that made a lot of women uncomfortable and told him to stop several times. He even made sexual jokes about a girl who was a minor at the time, he also said he was writing a screenplay about a lesbian love story and wanted to cast this same girl (who is a straight woman). It’s completely disgusting Jospeh also made an apology that’s just straight up manipulation and blaming it on someone else. It’s disgusting as hell and quite honestly some of the worst I’ve seen on the site.

What all three share is they were all huge names on Film Twitter, they all have that “champion of women/nice guy mindset” and all three took advantage of their platform to manipulate and sexual harass/abuse women. What’s even worse is several people looked up to these people, some people felt betrayed because they were friends with them. Yet these three took advantage of that and manipulated people.

VI – “The Positivity Gang”

What I do want to mention a little more is about the whole “Positivity Gang” thing, I want to make it clear that not everyone involved in the Positivity Gang are abusers as some people were more then likely manipulated into being involved with it I just find it very strange how the biggest three members were the ones exposed as garbage people (I believe John was the one who created it). As I said before the Positivity Gang was a response to supposedly combat racism, sexism and sexual abuse, which is a good idea those things SHOULD be called out, however the whole positivity gang thing slowly but surely morphed into this “I’m better than you because I’m more of an activist than you and call out things more than you” if anything the whole positivity gang thing felt like performative activism and had a lot of “that’s enough activism for today” energy. I love to use my platform to call out crappy behavior especially as of lately ableism (you know the whole Sia thing.) the difference is I don’t boast about how I’m a better activist than other people. It’s great using your platform to call out hate in fact that’s encouraged, stepping over the line and claiming you are better than anyone else is NOT okay.

VII – Conclusion

So what can be done? Well spreading awareness, educating people, calling out crappy behavior and reporting this type of behavior is a start. I truly hope this conversation does not leave Film Twitter for awhile, time and time again I’ve seen people exposed for this behavior, it’s talked about for about 2 days and then everyone collectively forgets that it happened. It’s a very disturbing process that has made Film Twitter a very unsafe place for several people, heck some people flat out said they aren’t involved with Film Twitter anymore because of this very reason, plus there’s the heavy racism which I didn’t even talk about in this piece (I will make a piece in the future about it though) where a ton of people got exposed of being racists. Some people might bring up the whole “it’s just a few people that shouldn’t ruin Film Twitter for everyone!” The problem is here most of the names I mentioned in this piece were very popular names John, Haydn and Joseph were a huge part of Film Twitter, I remember back then you couldn’t go anywhere on Film Twitter without hearing their names, how positive they were and how much they apparently cared about people. It truly shows you never know someone which is a very harsh thing to learn. I truly hope this community gets better and more people start talking about this in great lengths.

One Night In Miami (2020)

One Night in Miami is a fictional account of one incredible night where icons Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered discussing their roles in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 60s.

One Night In Miami is one of the most powerful films of 2020, Regina King absolutely nails it with her directional debut! The idea of having four different black icons (Malcolm X, Cassius Clay, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke) telling their thoughts on topics such as civil rights movement, the black community and much more makes a very interesting concept that results in a flawless execution. Although One Night In Miami is a fictional account, the movie still feels extremely raw and very believable as well, it stays as grounded as possible throughout its running time. The acting here is truly amazing Kingsley Ben-Adir kills it as Malcolm X (he deserves an Oscar nomination) he captures the spirit of him quite well to the point where you are at loss for words. Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge and Leslie Odom Jr also do a fantastic job in their roles as well. Each of them bring their talents and something unique to the table and completely deliver, the writing is masterful there’s no other way to put it. There’s tons of powerful moments here that really stick with you, One Night In Miami gets even stronger when all four have a discussion with each other. Sharing their agreements, disagreements and topics they feel neutral on, it really explores who they are and what they ultimately think about the topic. The four sharing very different viewpoints and ideas is truly fascinating, One Night In Miami is truly a fascinating film that I absolutely recommend! It’s truly one of the best films of 2020 and one of the most powerful! I truly hope this gets some Oscar nominations.

MLK/FBI (2021)

Based on newly declassified files, Sam Pollard’s resonant film explores the US government’s surveillance and harassment of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reviewing MLK/FBI is sort of tricky but I’ll give a shot! MLK/FBI is very eye opening documentary about how the FBI wanted to humiliate Martin Luther King Jr and ruin his life, this is a documentary that I’ve been waiting to see for a good while now (I’ve had it on my radar ever since it premiered at TIFF) and the wait was definitely worth it. Learning more about King and how the FBI desperately wanted to take him down because they feared him was truly some very disturbing stuff. The film itself really shows how the FBI can attempt/actually destroy your life and all it takes for them is to not like you or fear you. Martin Luther King Jr was a brilliant speaker and this documentary shows you more of that, there’s tons of goosebump moments that truly blow you away,m. The bravery and absolute genius of King is and always will be remarkable, the documentary itself is extremely well crafted, between a lot of interesting interviews to some footage that is quite interesting. The film really has a little bit of everything to make this a fantastic watch, it’s also very informative as well there’s somethings in this film I didn’t know about or knew of them I just didn’t know about it 100%. I also really like that Sam Pollard went all out with the topic, there’s so much information in this documentary that I can’t put it into words. All I know is that it’s definitely one of the highlights of 2021 so far, I truly hope this gets nominated for best documentary.

The Ultimate Playlist Of Noise (2021)

Marcus, an audio-obsessed high school senior, learns he must undergo brain surgery that will render him deaf, and decides to seize control of his fate by recording the Ultimate Playlist of Noise.

This was a surprise, while it might not be nowhere near as good as Sound Of Metal, The Ultimate Playlist Of Noise does a pretty solid job of telling a heartfelt story, Marcus played by Keenan Johnson learns he has to go under a surgery that will make him deaf. There’s some teen movie elements in the movie that at times work and at other times don’t, some of the characters aren’t very well written. They are stock characters you would see in a lot of teen movies, the writing does kind of take you out of the film at times. But what makes this movie actually decent is mostly the acting, the heart of the movie and the last 10 minutes. It’s a very heartfelt movie that does become pretty powerful at the last 10 minutes, the build up was quite good and felt very raw. Overall The Ultimate Playlist of Noise is a very straightforward movie and for Hulu’s first original movie of the year it’s quite great! Give this one a watch.

Don’t Tell A Soul (2021) and Downfalls High (2021) Movie Reviews.

Two thieving teenage brothers, stealing money to help their sick mom, match wits with a troubled security guard stuck at the bottom of a forgotten well.

I’m not sure how they did it but they made Rainn Wilson actually creepy and intimidating, plus the movie itself was a huge surprise! Don’t Tell A Soul is definitely familiar in a lot of ways and is certainly not going to break any new ground, however the movie has some surprisingly decent acting Rainn Wilson being the stand out, writing that works pretty well yes there are a lot of ridiculous moments but the final act of the film really helps the film out. While the twist was pretty predictable it strangely still works, it felt like a classic urban legend type twist a twist that you see coming but you don’t mind at all because it actually works. The major flaws I do have is some of the acting does get over the top as well as the writing, but as the movie goes on it gets better. Overall Don’t Tell A Soul is a very simple horror movie that goes straight to the point and is a very decent movie in general. As I said it’s not going to break any new ground but is something that I recommend giving a watch.

When reserved and lonely teenager Fenix (Chase Hudson) meets popular high school girl Scarlett (Sydney Sweeney), the two form a bond that shapes the rest of his life. A musical drama featuring the music of Machine Gun Kelly.

Despite not being a Machine Gun Kelly fan I was still excited for Downfalls High when the trailer dropped…this was a disappointment. Sydney Sweeney was great with what she had to work with, some of the songs I actually liked and that’s really about it. Chase Hudson or Lil Huddy can’t act, he was easily the worst part about all of this and really takes you out of it. It’s very unfortunate because you can tell there was effort put into it, the project just doesn’t come together at all. The plot is all over the place which is very strange considering 85% of the movie is just the songs, I think the biggest mistake was advertising this to be a “musical movie” where it really isn’t a movie, if you take away the plot all your left with is a collection of music videos. Which isn’t a bad thing but not what was advertised, I’m sure Machine Gun Kelly Fans will love this everyone else should probably give this a skip.

2020 Movie Catch Up: Assassin’s (2020)

An account of the two women convicted of assassinating Kim Jong-un’s half-brother, Kim Jong-nam. The film follows the women’s trials in an attempt to understand whether they are trained killers or simply pawns.

Assassins honestly does not have a whole lot going for it, it’s one of those documentaries where instead of watching it you can easily look at the Wikipedia page that will give you the same information. There’s a couple interviews that are at least interesting and are worth listening to, but otherwise the film itself is really nothing special. It’s well crafted and does go over and what led up to Kim Jong-nam’s assassination back in February of 2017….and that’s pretty much the documentary, it’s simple and will inform people who haven’t heard of the assassination quite well. Really not much else to say here, it’s a fine enough of documentary just not something that can be easily read on Wikipedia.

News Of The World (2020), Outside The Wire (2021) and Run Hide Fight (2021) Movie Reviews!

A Civil War veteran agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will. They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.

Going into News Of The World I had little to no interest if we are going to be honest, after watching it there’s definitely a lot I like about it but I can’t say it’s going to be anything I’m going to look back to. Tom Hanks does a fantastic job in his role and gives a ton of great moments that truly do shine, the cinematography is very well done combined with the setting to give the film a very believable look to it like you are actually there as the viewer. It’s also a nice little throwback to the classic western movies, there’s a couple instances where they throw in some classic elements. With all that said News Of The World is heavily outclassed by a lot of better films of 2020, parts of the film do take some time to get going and often times lead the film to a sudden halt. Which does screw the pacing up heavily, besides Tom Hanks nobody else really gave a performance that was anything noteworthy, sure the rest of the cast was great and they got the job done but there wasn’t really anything special about the other performances. With that said News Of The World is a massive improvement from Paul Greengrass’s last film 22 July, writing wise the movie got the job done and did have some beautiful moments. But I don’t think it was enough to land anything truly special, overall News Of The World is a solid film that I would recommend checking out, just don’t go into this movie expecting anything to blow you away.

7/10 B

In the near future, a drone pilot sent into a war zone finds himself paired with a top-secret android officer on a mission to stop a nuclear attack.

I feel like a very common problem a lot of these Netflix action and sci-fi movies that attempt to be blockbuster movies such as Project Power, Bright, Extraction and a few others is they don’t do nearly enough. Outside The Wire is a perfect example of this, the only thing I can really praise is the chemistry between Anthony Mackie and Damson Idris. They worked really well together and had some very decent moments that show their acting abilities. Unfortunately that’s where the positives end, everything else in this movie is a chore to sit through. Outside The Wire has a running time of 1 hour and 55 minutes which feels 3 hours long due to very uneven pacing that feels like it keeps going on. As good as Mackie and Idris are their characters are very cliched action movie stock characters who don’t have much of a personality. The filming I will say has it’s moments of some nice shots that a lot of these movies tend to have, but nothing really sticks out which I feel can be said for the rest of the movie. Everything in Outside The Wire you have seen done far better in other films, it’s shame because this movie does have some ideas that could have worked if it was better written. The ideas the movie tries to use come off as doing the bare minimum and not exploring them all the way through, Mikael Hafstrom did a decent job with Escape Plan a terrible job with The Rite and a pretty bad one with Outside The Wire. There just really is not that much to this film unfortunately, I don’t recommend this unless your a die hard fan of Anthony Mackie.

2/10 F

17-year-old Zoe Hull uses her wits, survival skills, and compassion to fight for her life, and those of her fellow classmates, against a group of live-streaming school shooters.

To clear some confusion Ben Shapiro and Dailywire did NOT make this movie, they only picked up the rights to it because nobody else would release (it’s very easy to see why) it was torn to shreds at its premier at the Venice Film Festival last year and is now just releasing. Again it’s very easy to see why, clearly everyone involved with this movie has no idea what makes a good movie. There are several huge flaws that are just flat out embarrassing, first off the editing is atrocious. It almost feels like it wasn’t made by a human, or you know someone didn’t bother to look over the editing and just called it a day. The editing also makes the pacing very awkward at times, you can go from one scene with two people talking to all of a sudden a shooting with no real build up. The movie portrays school shootings in a very distasteful way, not to mention almost of the scenes in this movie would never happen during a school shooting. It uses a very serious topic that is still going on today in America and tries to play it off as “see school shootings aren’t so bad if you defend yourself!” The acting and writing are both just horrible, I know Isabel May is trying to give it her all. But not even she can really save it, the writing feels like a first draft to a school play. It has absolutely no substance to it at all, it doesn’t try to bring up any other solution other then “throw guns at the problem” plus the characters just feel incredibly unrealistic. There’s this one scene where Isabel May is trying to warn one of the teachers who’s teaching a class through a window that there’s a school shooting. The teacher flat out doesn’t listen and close the blinds…I’m sorry but that would never happen, the fact they try to pass this scene off as realistic is really disgusting to me. If you take out all the clear “let’s make this to dunk on the other side” points it would still fall flat, what your left with is a horrendous Die Hard clone. I truly believe there is better ways of talking about school shootings film, this just isn’t it at all. In fact this is a prime example of what NOT to do, I really have nothing else to say here but give this one a pass. So far the worst of 2021.

Disgrace To Cinema F
