Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry (2021) Movie Review!

An intimate look at the singer-songwriter’s journey, navigating life on the road, on stage, and at home, while creating her debut album.

Billie Eilish is currently one of the biggest stars, I’ve been a huge fan of her’s since she started. This documentary is unlike any documentary about a celebrity it’s a coming of age story from when Billie was at the age 16 (when R.J. Cutler started filming her before her success) to where she is now as one of the biggest stars in the world. I feel like what I have always liked about Billie Eilish is that she comes off as one of the most real celebrities, she genuinely cares for her fans and audience and when you actually sit down and listen to her speak it’s quite impressive. That documentary proves that point even more, it shows a very human side to Billie, as I said earlier it’s a coming of age story and a truly beautiful one as well. You learn almost everything about Billie to the point where it feels like you are having a conversation with someone you listening to her tell you about her life. Billie talks about her Tourette’s syndrome and how she has suicidal thoughts but she expresses that through words rather than actions. One of the strongest things aspects is Billie’s beautiful relationship with her family, each of her family members taught her something for instance her mom taught her about songwriting, her dad taught her how to play the ukulele and the piano finally her brother produced her and was her songwriting cohort. The interactions between her and her family is seriously some of the most beautiful interactions I’ve seen in a long time, they all are there for each other no matter what and it’s truly a beautiful thing. As the documentary goes on you learn more and more about Billie and how she got to where she is now and you as the viewer get completely invested into it. A lot of things a lot of documentaries about celebrities don’t really do at all is show a human side to the celebrity they are talking about, a lot of the time it feels like we don’t learn much about their personality or how they are as people. Sure we are given information and told they are “nice and incredible” but we never see that at all. With Billie Eilish The World’s A Little Blurry we get to see Billie’s actions, how Billie is as a person, how Billie reacts to certain situations and how she thinks and feels, it’s truly refreshing to actually see something completely different. And by the end of the film it feels like you know every single thing about Billie, her personality is truly beautiful, her determination is very inspiring, and her love for her fans and family is truly a beautiful thing. The documentary made me cry at least 3 different times it’s mostly due to Billie’s journey as an artist and just how beautifully made this documentary is, this is the type of filmmaking that really gets me the most. Seeing the life, or lives of a certain person or group of people is truly amazing and inspiring. You also start feeling like you can relate to Billie given how much information you are told, any documentary that can get you to feel relatable to a celebrity and to bring out a human side of them I feel is successful. Overall Billie Eilish The World’s A Little Blurry is masterful, I absolutely recommend you check this one out. It’s definitely one of the highlights so far this year!

WandaVision (2021) Series Review!

Wanda Maximoff and Vision – two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives – begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

WandaVision is the start of Phase 4 of the MCU and it’s a pretty strong start! Going into the series I was pretty excited for it Wanda has always been one of my favorite characters of the MCU so I was very happy to see a show that was going to be centered around her. Elizabeth Olsen completely slays it in her performance here, so much so that I predict she could possibly get nominated for an Emmy she does such an incredible job and truly is Wanda Maximoff. The same can be said for Paul Bettany as Vision he does a magnificent job and really brings out his talent, the chemistry between Olsen and Bettany is terrific and this is the best showcase of it. This series really does a fantastic job of making you care about the two and their chemistry between one another. Other performances such as Kathryn Hahn and Teyonah Parris both do a very solid job in their roles! The writing got better and better as the series went forward, some of the jokes from the first few episodes were definitely a hit or miss some jokes I laughed at and others whatever. I will give WandaVision credit that it did not resort to the bad Marvel humor that’s present in some of the films (Doctor Strange, Thor The Dark World and a few others) as the series reached its end the writing gave us tons of character development for many of the characters and gave us a very solid villain… Agatha Harkness, one of the things going into WandaVision I was a bit concerned about was if the villain was going to be good. But they really hit it out of the park Agatha is a very solid villain that is a lot of fun, she might not be in the ranks of Loki, Ego and a few others, but she is very close. Her backstory is interesting and her motivations make sense! Hayward is not even worth mentioning to be quite honest, Josh Stamberg does a fine job in the role but Tyler Hayward just feels like the equivalent of a henchmen from one of the non canon Dragon Ball Z movies. He’s a very flat character with little to no personality who half the time I forgot existed. One major issue I did have with the finale is what they did with Monica Rambeau they really could have done something so much better with her character and it felt like they were building up to something to do with her character. However that doesn’t stop the finale from being a very solid ending! Overall WandaVision is really great, it’s refreshing to see the MCU do something different and it’s a very solid start to Phase 4!

Raya And The Last Dragon (2021) Movie Review!

In a realm known as Kumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon.

Raya And The Last Dragon is a brilliant film, that showcases so many strong elements in one film. For starters Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina are both incredible especially their chemistry. The both of them work so well together and go all out with their talent, the animation is absolutely stunning. Combine the animation with the world building and you get something truly beautiful, speaking of which the world building is brilliant it really displays the culture and is very respectful of it as well. The score is flawless it combines so many different types of incredible sounds and instruments together such as exotic strings, and hand drums with synths and a booming bass. Truly some beautiful music that completely fits this movie, the story is emotional, powerful and just overall a joy to listen to. The directors Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting) and Don Hall (Big Hero 6) both did an incredible, they truly brought so much to the film. Seeing Disney tackle a different culture and doing it respectfully is a breath of fresh air that I most certainly would not mind seeing them do it again. The writing is also top notch, it’s quite honestly some of the most beautiful writing I’ve seen in a Disney animated movie in awhile (not counting Pixar). Finally there’s the characters which are fantastic, they are given so much character development and are given so much care to the point where you fall for the characters. Overall Raya And The Last Dragon is one of the strongest films so far this year, truly a beautiful film that I highly recommend.

SpongeBob: Sponge On The Run (2021) Movie Review!

After SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home.

This is Tim Hill’s best film since Muppets In Space by far. What do you say here exactly? It’s Spongebob, Spongebob Sponge On The Run plays out exactly how you would expect. Sponge On The Run is pretty much the show but in movie form, sure some of the jokes really don’t land at all. But there are some jokes that do work and I found the songs to pretty solid, seeing Keanu Reeves was also pretty neat as well. The animation does it’s job, it’s not particularly interesting and it’s not terrible in anyway. Sponge On The Run suffers from a story that isn’t particularly great, it’s a very typical animated movie plot. The writing is a hit or miss in a lot of areas, but for the most part it’s very generic. But at least Sponge On The Run is still fun (for the most part) It’s definitely not as good as the other two movies, but for what the movie is it’s a decent watch. Will I ever watch it again? Probably not but it’s a solid timekiller. If your a fan of Spongebob I recommend it.

The United States Vs Billie Holiday (2021) Movie Review!

Follows Holiday during her career as she is targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover sting operation led by black Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher, with whom she had a tumultuous affair.

The United States Vs Billie Holiday is the most frustrating movie so far this year, this is truly a movie that could have been really great but so much is holding it back from being good. It goes without saying but Andra Day gives an incredible performance, she captures the charisma and star power that Billie Holiday had really well. Andra Day has so much control and combine that with her very powerful singing voice, you truly got yourself a fantastic role. Speaking of which I also really liked the music, the songs are all very well song and truly have a beautiful feel to them. It’s just such a shame the rest of the movie has to be very below average, none of the other roles stood out at all, the writing was way too safe and felt like a nothing special about it biopic and Lee Daniel’s direction was all over the place. The writing feels like it’s trying to do more than be a biopic and completely fails at it. As I said earlier the direction was a mess, at times the direction has it’s moments but those are far and few in between. It’s frustrating because there are a few really strong moments where it shows that the movie does shine and does bring in some powerful scenes. The problem is those scenes are overshadowed by a majority of the movie that just doesn’t seem to know what it wants. It’s a shame because Billie Holiday’s life is very interesting and I just wish the movie did a far better job. I wouldn’t go as far to say that the movie is bad, it’s just one that is incredibly below average.

Coming 2 America (2021) Movie Review!

The African monarch Akeem learns he has a long-lost son in the United States and must return to America to meet this unexpected heir and build a relationship with his son.

Coming 2 America is a sequel to the 1988 film Coming to America…a sequel that just sort of came out of nowhere. Coming 2 America is one of those sequels where it definitely tries it’s hardest to be like the first film but doesn’t quite make it. There is a lot to like however, Eddie Murphy seems like he had a ton of fun and his performance shows that as well, I said in my Dolemite is My Name review that I love seeing Eddie Murphy return and that applies here as well. All of the rest of the cast were quite great as well Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Tracey Morgan, Leslie Jones and many others did a solid job. The production design I thought was very solid as well, it added a lot of detail and gave a lot of energy. What does hold Coming 2 America back however is the writing which isn’t exactly that strong, as I said earlier the movie tries very hard to be exactly like the first movie but it doesn’t quite make it. It’s a shame to because Craig Brewer (who previously directed Dolemite is My Name) is in the directors chair and I feel there could have been so much potential. With that said the movie isn’t bad, it’s just the writing really does not do too much for the film and it’s overall forgettable.

Boss Level and Lucky (2021) Movie Reviews!

A retired special forces officer is trapped in a never ending time loop on the day of his death.

The best way to describe to Boss Level is dumb fun, the acting overall is pretty decent Frank Grillo, Mel Gibson and Naomi Watts all do a very solid job in their roles. The action itself is well choreographed and gives plenty of detail, Boss Level is lacking when it comes writing as a lot of it feels way too on the nose towards the end. But the movie does capture how a lot of 80s and 90s action movies were pretty straightforward so it does a decent job of doing that. Boss Level definitely won’t break any new ground when it comes to the action genre, but it’s certainly not a bad attempt from director Joe Carnahan (director of The Grey)

A suburban woman fights to be believed as she finds herself stalked by a threatening figure who returns to her house night after night. When she can’t get help from those around her, she is forced to take matters into her own hands.

I really don’t have much to say about Lucky, it’s an interesting take on the stalker film genre that’s become way too common. However the execution I felt was incredibly lacking, it doesn’t help that the acting wasn’t exactly that great. The writing once again had interesting ideas but like the premise of the movie was really lacking in terms of execution. The rest of the movie is just very forgettable, it’s the type of movie where after you finish watching it you will quickly forget about. It’s a shame too because I was pretty interested in this movie, missed opportunity.

Saint Maud (2021) Movie Review!

Follows a pious nurse who becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of her dying patient.

Saint Maud has been one of my most anticipated films for the longest time now, it finally came out last month and I’ve thought about this film for awhile now. Saint Maud delivers in every single way possible, what I especially love about it is it was something I completely did not expect all. It was a completely different type of horror that has really not been done, It feels more like a drama but has so much horror elements! The performances here are all fantastic Morfydd Clark does a fantastic job in the leading role, she delivers a raw and an incredibly haunting performance that give me chills. The same can be said for Jennifer Ehle truly a haunting performance. The direction from Rose Glass (one of the most coolest names by the way) did such a beautiful job with this film. Glass truly knows how to set a atmosphere and make the film visually disturbing. The narrative is incredibly powerful it ranges from tacking the idea of belief it shows how much it can damage a person when the people who love you the most don’t respect those beliefs. There’s also a fantasy element or escapism feel to it, showing how Maud attempts to escape the current situation she’s in but ultimately she can’t. There’s tons of grief and powerful scenes that blend so well together, the final act is where you are put in this perspective that Maud must go through what is about to happen. It’s truly some of the most haunting and quite powerful scenes in a film I’ve seen in a long time. With a runtime of 84 minutes long it’s quite impressive how much Rose Glass managed to put into this film and not make it rushed at all. Saint Maud gives you so much to think about it’s a masterful film that truly challenges the viewer into questioning what are beliefs. Combine all of those elements with some raw writing and beautifully haunting direction you got yourself a perfect horror film. I highly recommend this one.

Tom And Jerry (2021) Movie Review!

Adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera property, which reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry.

Tom & Jerry is the third (fourth if you count Wonder Woman) of the Warner Brothers and HBO Max movie deal. I actually thought Tom & Jerry had quite a lot of potential, the trailer was very promising and it didn’t turn Tom & Jerry into CGI nightmare fuel, the trailer had some of the charm of Tom & Jerry so I remained hopeful…until the movie came out. Now look I wasn’t expecting an Oscar winning script or movie but good lord they dropped the ball on this one. What I did like was the few scenes of Tom & Jerry being well Tom & Jerry, it had the energy of what the cartoons had which was very nice to see. Plus some of the animation added in looked decent enough….the problem is it wasn’t used really well at all, I knew from the very beginning when the movie opens up with a rapping bird I was in for a movie that feels like it’s from the early 2000s family movie era. Acting wise it wasn’t good, even Chloe Grace Moretz couldn’t save this movie at all, it seriously felt like she was phoning it in which is quite unfortunate. Everyone else is just not good at all Michael Peña is just not funny at all (that’s 100% the script’s fault which I’ll get to in a second) and everyone else is just not noteworthy at all. What ultimately kills Tom & Jerry are two things, the movie focuses way too much on the human characters and the whole hotel story. Which yes I get is the main central story….but could have they at least made it interesting? When I said earlier that this movie felt like something straight out of the early 2000s family movie era this is a huge part of what I meant. You are going to know exactly how it goes if you watched at least one early 2000s family movie, Tom & Jerry in a hotel doesn’t sound like a bad idea in fact it sounds like a good one! There could have been many ways to turn this concept into something fun, but instead they went with the worst possible choice they could. Finally there is the script…oh lord what happened here? None of the jokes landed at all, a lot of it was the most cheap and unoriginal humor you could imagine. They tried to shove so many jokes at almost any given opportunity it started to become very tiring, Tom & Jerry does not need a joke every 0.2 seconds that’s not what made Tom & Jerry so popular. I also really wish they gave this movie to a different director Tim Story? Seriously the guy who previously directed Shaft (2019) plus some other terrible movies such as Ride Along 2 and two Fantastic Four movies from the 2000s. I will say though that I think kids will love it, despite the several flaws this movie has, kids will most definitely dig this movie. But overall Tom & Jerry is terrible what could have been a decent movie ended up being a manufactured garbage family movie. Give this one a pass.

Moxie (2021) Movie Review!

Fed up with the sexist and toxic status quo at her high school, a shy 16-year-old finds inspiration from her mother’s rebellious past and anonymously publishes a zine that sparks a school-wide, coming-of-rage revolution.

Moxie is actually a decent surprise, it isn’t anything mind blowing but let me tell you it’s a huge step up from Amy Poehler’s last film “Wine Country” there is a lot of heart in this movie and I absolutely respect on what it’s saying. The acting is overall not bad except Patrick Schwarzenegger who plays a very one note jock that is no different from any other movie. For me the standout is Alycia Pascual-Pena she does such a great job to the point where I really wish her character was the main character. Mostly because as decent of a performance Hadley Robinson gives her character Vivian is not interesting at all, there really isn’t anything special going for her character. She’s kind of the very definition of a main character without anything interesting added to it, I do feel at times the movie does fall in familiar territory. Some of the jokes work others don’t, what makes Moxie decent is that it was well directed. Despite writing flaws for some characters Amy Poehler made a lot of the film work, overall Moxie might not be anything groundbreaking but it’s a decent movie that I recommend giving a watch.
