Voyagers (2021) Movie Review!

A crew of astronauts on a multi-generational mission descend into paranoia and madness, not knowing what is real or not.

Does anyone remember when this came out in theaters? Voyagers was quietly put on to VOD Friday and I definitely see why there was barely any advertising, Neil Burger (director of The Upside, Limitless and Divergent) is back and like Divergent ends up being a sci-fi movie that could have been good but completely misses it’s mark. Like everyone else has been saying Voyagers is basically Lord Of The Flies only in space and nowhere near as good or interesting. Voyagers has some great shots that are quite beautiful, but between the acting and writing….yikes. Both feel incredibly flat and have no energy put into them, it feels like a huge chore just to listen to the writing. A lot of it is very unimaginative and feels like any given sci-fi movie but worse, there’s nothing here that hasn’t been done before which is quite unfortunate. As I said before the acting is also really bad, none of it gives the audience a chance to actually feel for any of the characters or makes anything happening on screen feel like this is worth sitting through. It’s a shame because Voyagers did have potential but sadly ends up being a giant sci-fi cliche fest.

About Endlessness (2021) Movie Review!

A kaleidoscope of the human condition includes scenes of a couple floating over war-torn Germany, a father and his daughter in the pouring rain, a teenager dancing outside a cafe, and a defeated army marching to a prisoner-of-war camp.

I’m not going to say much because I seriously don’t want to spoil this movie. About Endlessness is cinematic magic, the film gives off that feeling throughout the running time. From the incredibly beautiful acting and writing that feels as raw as possible, to the direction that is incredibly well done. The film holds several shots without movement in many different scenes that make the audience absorb what they are watching, in each of these shots you can find something incredibly meaningful. The humor is also well done it’s definitely not the type of comedy you would expect it’s something interesting and new, the scene of the two main characters flying through the air is one of the most beautiful scenes in a film I’ve seen so far this year. It’s truly a beautiful scene that will blow you away! I highly recommend giving this one a watch!

Quick Reviews: The Resort and The Virtuoso (2021)

Four friends head to Hawaii to investigate reports of a haunting at an abandoned resort in hopes of finding the infamous Half-Faced Girl. When they arrive, they soon learn you should be careful what you wish for.

If someone came up to me and said “this isn’t an actual movie this is just a college film project” I would have believed them….because what is this? On the surface it sounds like some potential to be a fun but stupid movie, but between the filming, editing, acting and writing it’s just horrendous. It feels like someone worked on this in less then a day and sent this out without anyone looking over it. Doesn’t help that the movie took way too long to get to the actual plot of the movie and by then it’s too little too late, I get that it’s low budget but I’ve seen far better written, acted and directed movies with low budgets. The only positive I can really give this movie is the location as it is quite beautiful, definitely give this one a skip…

Danger, deception and murder descend upon a sleepy town when a professional assassin accepts a new assignment from his enigmatic boss.

Not going to say a whole lot because this is yet another garbage movie coming out from Lionsgate VOD section and it’s almost the same crap as other movies but with a few differences. For one thing I actually like the concept what hurts it for me is Anson Mount’s very robotic voiceover which is throughout the movie, there is some decent filming here and there. Anthony Hopkins is pretty great as well trying his best with such a limited script that really doesn’t have much to work with. Everything else in the movie isn’t good, the writing is very dull, the acting outside of Anthony Hopkins is nothing to write home about and the directing is lifeless.

Most Anticipated Movies Of May 2021!

April pretty much came and went! While April didn’t have the largest number of releases, May is when things get really busy. With more theaters opening up, release dates getting more common and being reveled, plus very few delays now. May is jam packed with releases I had to narrow it down to 18, so throughout the month of May definitely expect more and more reviews. Anyway here’s my most anticipated for May!

In The Earth I saw back in January, last week it got it’s theater release now it’s getting it’s VOD release which is May 7th highly recommend checking it out!

Street Gang: How We Got To Sesame Street is another film I saw at Sundance back in January and it’s also getting a VOD release May 7th. If you want a really good history on Sesame Street this is definitely something worth checking out. Or if you just want the nostalgia factor you will get it here.

Sound Of Violence I saw back in March from the SXSW festival, a very different slasher movie that’s a whole lot of fun. It releases on VOD May 21st.

The last one of the movies on the list I’ve already seen is The Killing Of Two Lovers which I saw back in December of last year. It’s a fantastic movie that highly recommend, it releases on May 14th on VOD and Theaters!

Let’s skim a few of these movies

Together Together releases May 11th on VOD

Pink All I Know So Far releases May 21st on Amazon Prime Video

Plan B releases May 28th on Hulu

Blast Beat releases May 21st on VOD

New Order releases May 21st in Theaters

Four Good Days releases May 21st on VOD

Cruella surprisingly looks very promising, it has a lot of talent involved which gives me hope that it could actually turn out to be a very solid movie! It releases May 28th on Disney+

Those Who Wish Me Dead is the next movie in the Warner Bros and HBO Max deal, it looks like a solid movie that I truly hope is pretty good! Releases May 14th on HBO Max.

Oxygen is directed by Alexandre Aje who previously did Crawl, this one seems pretty decent!! It releases May 12th on Netflix!

Woman In The Window was stuck in limbo for quite awhile until it finally got it’s release date May 14th on Netflix, it looks really promising!

Army Of The Dead is a movie that has been in talks ever since Zack Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead Released! Now it’s finally coming out and it seems like a ton of fun!!! It’s out on Netflix May 21st

Finally there’s the 3 theater releases I’m really excited for!

Profile is said to be a lot like Searching, it was stuck in release date limbo for quite awhile (since 2018) until very recently, it’s out in theaters on May 14th! The trailer looks really interesting as well, definitely one of my most anticipated of the year!

Spiral: The Book Of Saw I’ve been excited for ever since the first trailer was shown last year, I’m a huge fan of the Saw franchise and this one looks just as interesting as some of the other movies. It releases May 14th in theaters.

Finally there’s A Quiet Place Part II a movie that I’ve been excited for awhile now, I absolutely loved the first film and this one looks just as interesting! This has potential to be another fantastic horror movie sequel!!

And that’s it! Quite a lot to look forward to!!!

Things Heard & Seen (2021)

An artist relocates to the Hudson Valley and begins to suspect that her marriage has a sinister darkness, one that rivals her new home’s history.

Finding an actual really good Netflix Original Horror Movie is very hard to come by, there’s been a handful in the last few years that have been really good such as Cam, Cargo, Hush, The Ritual, The Babysitter movies, Veronica, Gerald’s Game and a few others. Most of the time though they end up being very forgettable movies that get used for clickbait such as “Netflix just released the scariest movie ever made” Things Heard & Seen is the definition of a forgettable horror movie. The only reason this got the attention it did was because Amanda Seyfried is the leading role, which to be fair she’s actually not half bad in it. In fact I would even say she’s pretty decent as well as the setting, filming and some of the atmosphere works as well. What destroys this movie is the trainwreck writing, pacing and the running time. First off the writing does little to nothing to bring any interest the movie might have, it truly feels like the writers had no idea what the plot was going to be so they wrote a first draft and used that for the movie. Things Heard & Seen also tries to use a lot of elements from Amityville (a movie I’m not even a huge fan of) but none of it sticks, it really ends up being a very cliched horror movie with no scares at all. The writing prevents the movie from trying to do anything remotely interesting and gives the audience very vague plot lines. The pacing combined with the running time is very hard to sit through, at one point the movie begins to feel like a chore to sit through. Which is one of the worst things that can happen to a movie, speaking of the running time can someone explain to me how and why this movie is 2 hours long? This could have easily fit to be a 80 minute movie and nothing would have changed. It attempts to be a slow burn but fails in a lot of areas, it doesn’t help that none of the characters are remotely interesting. It’s a shame because I do think Things Heard & Seen could have worked if it wasn’t trying to take elements from better movies and if the writing was changed quite a bit. It might not be the absolute worst horror movie in Netflix’s catalog but I will say this was definitely a huge missed opportunity.

The Marksman (2021) Movie Review!

A rancher on the Arizona border becomes the unlikely defender of a young Mexican boy desperately fleeing the cartel assassins who’ve pursued him into the U.S.

Yep The Marksman is definitely a January movie, It’s one of those action movies a studio puts out in January because it doesn’t have much going for it and this is definitely the definition of it. The Marksman is definitely not bad as Liam Neeson is pretty solid and the movie itself is well filmed and for the most part well acted. What stops it from being at least passable is the very formulaic story that has been done to death numerous times, plus it’s definitely not as good as some of the other Liam Neeson action movies from the past such as The Commuter or Non-Stop. This one just feels like it does the bare minimum and then calls it a day, the writing attempts to try and throw in some character study type moments into the mix. While that’s a good idea on paper I’m not entirely sure if it works well here, granted there’s a few decent moments but there really isn’t anything that you the viewer is going to be really invested in. It tries to do way too much for a movie that really should have just been a fun Liam Neeson action movie. It’s definitely not bad as there is some fun to be had but it’s easily one of the most forgettable movies I’ve seen so far this year.

Justice Society: World War II (2021) Movie Review.

The Justice Society of America , a group of heroes aiding the allies in World War 2, acquire an ally from the future who sends them on an adventure that changes history.

Not a whole lot to say here, Justice Society: World War II is the newest DC Animated movie and not a bad one either. The characters are quite solid Wonder Woman being the standout, the animation is going to definitely be a hit or miss for some people although I thought it wasn’t too bad. It was different and for what it was it wasn’t too bad looking, what does drag this movie down is the plot and the main villain. The plot is sort of a mess and does have that “Saturday morning cartoon” feel to it and not in a very good way, the main villain is just sort of there and really isn’t anything special. With that said the movie itself is at least fun and interesting for the most part, it’s a very serviceable movie that does a lot right!

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (2021) Series Review!

Following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Sam Wilson/Falcon and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities and their patience.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the second MCU Disney Plus series releasing almost right after WandaVision. TFATWS wasn’t one of the series I was incredibly excited for, but the end result I have to say isn’t too bad at all. First a bit about the characters, easily the two show stealers are Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) both have incredible chemistry between one another, both Mackie and Stan have a bunch of incredible moments and show how talented they both are as actors. The series does a fantastic job of exploring both their characters and giving them a lot of development, by the end of the series you feel Anthony Mackie’s journey is complete when it comes to taking the mantle as Captain America! As for the everyone else there’s a few noteworthy performances such as Daniel Brühl as Zemo who is easily one of the best parts in a few of the episodes (I’ll get more into each episode in a bit), Wyatt Russell as John Walker who absolutely delivers in episode 4 In particular, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley and Erin Kellyman as Karli Morgenthau who I don’t think is exactly the best MCU villain but due to Kellyman’s performance she really makes it work and she certainly isn’t bad. She gets more development as the series progress, now let’s talk a little about each episode and how they are and then I’ll wrap this up with a conclusion. The first episode is what you would expect a nice introduction that opens with a pretty neat action scene and gives a basic introduction of what to expect, Sam Wilson’s journey and much more. It’s not anything too crazy but that’s to be expected. Unfortunately episodes 2 and 3 are what puts the series to a complete halt, while there are some positives about the episodes (Zemmo being the best part of episode 3), some action scenes and of course Mackie and Stan’s performances. The rest of episodes 2 and 3 just really do not do much and are just not that interesting, both episodes have nowhere near as many character moments as the rest of the series which is very unfortunate. However that all changes with episode four which is hands down my absolute favorite of the series, it opens up with a very powerful character moment for Bucky and really shows how incredible Sebastian Stan is as an actor. it’s some of the darkest material the MCU has ever done and it was done really well, the atmosphere is thrilling, the writing is incredibly well done and Wyatt Russell as I said before does such a fantastic job in this episode. You really start to see a lot of his character and how he’s a ticking time bomb, which is probably what I would describe this episode as a ticking time bomb! Episode 5 is a wonderful lead up to the final episode, it heavily focuses on a ton of character moments especially for Sam Wilson and his journey to become Captain America. It’s a long episode but an incredibly well written and directed episode that’s a huge highlight of the series. Finally there’s episode 6 which is pretty solid, I don’t think it’s as strong as episode 4 or 5 but it does deliver when it comes to action, finally seeing Sam Wilson as Captain America, tackling a few themes and much more. It heavily sets up for Captain America 4 (which was just announced) and what I can assume a season 2 of the show. Episode 6 did everything it was sent out to do I just wish it could have been a tad longer. Overall the series is solid, it has it’s rough spots that some MCU movies suffer from but when the series gets good it gets really good. There’s so much to love about it and it’s mainly due to Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan plus the growth of their characters that make this series worth it!

Mortal Kombat (2021) Movie Review!

MMA fighter Cole Young seeks out Earth’s greatest champions in order to stand against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.

Mortal Kombat (2021) is one of the few video game adaption movies to actually be a great movie, the characters are pretty well done although some were very underdeveloped such as Mileena, Raiden and a few others. The character who were developed or had a lot of screentime really made up for it, Sub-Zero played by Joe Taslim was badass and just an overall perfect. He really perfected Sub-Zero’s character from his abilities to his actions and so on. Jax played by Mehcad Brooks was a favorite of mine, while Jax doesn’t get a ton of development Brook’s performance makes it work, Josh Lawson as Kano is easily one of the highlights of the film, he’s hilarious, does something very interesting with the character and is a ton of fun throughout the film. Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion is also pretty badass he’s not in the movie very long but when he does show up it’s one of the best moments of the film. Finally there’s Ludi Lin as Liu Kang who’s easily one of my favorites, every scene he’s in is just great and like some of the other actors I mentioned gives a very strong portrayal of one of the most iconic characters from the series! The writing is definitely not always perfect, there are some very cheesy lines but at least the movie embraces that it’s cheesy and has a ton of fun which leads to the gore. The fatality scenes are absolute perfection, if you go into this movie wanting a ton of gore this movie will deliver. It’s truly everything a Mortal Kombat fan would want from a fatality, combine that with some really satisfying action scenes and you have yourself an incredibly entertaining movie. In terms of story like the writing it doesn’t always work, there’s some very familiar elements that the main character Cole Young (Lewis Tan) goes through, but it’s ultimately nothing terrible just something we have seen a bunch of times before that I do feel is a bit out of place. Overall Mortal Kombat is some of the most fun I’ve had with a movie so far this year, it’s truly a satisfying adaption that I highly recommend giving a watch especially if your a Mortal Kombat fan!!

Stowaway and Boys From County Hell (2021) Movie Reviews!

A stowaway on a mission to Mars sets off a series of unintended consequences.

Stowaway is a very serviceable Netflix Original movie and really not much else. The cast does a decent job Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette being the standouts, Daniel Dae Kim and Shamier Anderson both do a solid job as well. The visuals are great combined with a solid atmosphere that does give the movie some beautiful scenes. What ultimately stops Stowaway from being anything other then decent is the running time and the pacing, it has a 116 minute running time that could have easily been trimmed down. Take out 15-20 minutes of the movie and it wouldn’t change a thing, the pacing is very slow and the movie itself does become a chore to sit through once you reach the final act. Not much else to say here, a decent first time watch for a movie I don’t think I’ll ever revisit again.

6/10 C+

A crew of hardy road workers, led by a bickering Father and Son, must survive the night when they accidentally awaken an ancient Irish vampire.

Chris Baugh (director of Bad Day For The Cut) is back with Boys From County Hell and I have to say this wasn’t too bad. It’s another decent modern Vampire movie that manages to combine the humor with the atmosphere and actually do it quite well. It does take awhile to get going which ultimately does hurt the movie, there’s a ton of scenes that really did not need to be there. However once the movie gets going it’s well worth it, it’s a lot of fun with some pretty great scenes and vampires! Sure it might not be super original, it does use a lot of elements from other better films. But at least Boys From County Hell has fun while doing it which can’t be said for some other movies, in terms of acting and writing it’s nothing crazy. It’s better then expected but nothing really noteworthy which is perfectly fine in this case. Overall it’s a decent vampire movie, I still prefer Jakob’s Wife by a lot (when it comes to Vampire movies that came out this year). But I still recommend giving this one a try if your a fan of the genre.
