Nine Days (2021) Movie Review!

A reclusive man conducts a series of interviews with human souls for a chance to be born.

Nine Days is a film that has been on my mind ever since I saw it a few weeks ago, this was one of my most anticipated films of the year and I’m so glad to see that it didn’t disappoint. Nine Days is a very human film that tackles a lot of topics, but let’s start with the performances because they absolutely shine here. Winston Duke gives one of the best performances so far this year, he delivers so much into one role and makes you feel all sorts of emotions, his character is explored in great detail we slowly learn about him as the film goes on and about the world around him. Plus how he feels about the world in question, his performance gets even better during the final act of the film which is a very powerful scene that had me in tears. Other performances such as Benedict Wong and Zazie Beetz are also pretty fantastic as well, like Winston Duke both give very raw and quite powerful performances! The writing is what really adds so much to this film, as I said earlier it goes through many topics and it reaches to the point where it actually becomes relatable. There were moments where I found that Nine Days speaks to me on a personal level which made the experience all the more powerful to the point where I cried, feeling like you aren’t good or enough or you have those moments where you think you have nobody who supports you/likes you when in reality that’s not true is something that has happened to me quite a few times. And I feel this film does a pretty great job of explaining that situation, it’s a very depressing yet very thoughtful film that really gets to you. The cinematography combined with the score is absolutely beautiful as well, both compliment each other really well and turn this film into a one of a kind experience. It’s quite honestly some of the most beautiful filmmaking I’ve ever seen and that’s really saying something, it adds so much detail to the setting and makes it standout. Overall Nine Days is a film I highly recommend, I also do recommend going into this film knowing little as possible to make the experience even greater. Trust me you won’t be disappointed just bring tissues.

Tribeca Review: The Novice (2021)

An obsessive novice rower climbs the ranks of her college’s rowing team.

Finally at number one we have The Novice, which those who participated in the festival could easily see why. Everything in The Novice just blends so well together that leads to some incredible results. First off Isabelle Fuhrman gives her best performance to date, as well as giving one of the best performances of the year. She truly delivers in her role it’s raw, impactful and really shows how talented she really is. The atmosphere is thrilling to the point where it can almost be considered a horror film, the style of the film is up close and really beings you into what’s going on in certain scenes. The music also turns this film into a horror film by having a beautifully haunting feel to it, the film heavily reminded me of Whiplash which makes sense Lauren Hadaway who directs the film did the sound for Whipslash and you can easily tell. There’s so much level of care and attention to detail as well, it’s extraordinary and leads into disturbing territory. It’s a very interesting film about self destruction and how quickly it can happen. Hands down one of the best films of the year, I really hope this releases soon!

Tribeca Review: Catch The Fair One (2021)

A former champion boxer embarks on the fight of her life when she goes in search of her missing sister.

Catch The Fair One is one of the most intense and disturbing films so far this year, Kali Reis gives such a fantastic performance and definitely one of the best of the year. She really dives deep into her role and shows an incredible amount of talent that is showed throughout the film, the thrilling atmosphere that makes the film very uncomfortable adds so much to it as well, it brings a sense of realness to it that hits hard whenever it can. Director Josef Kubota also does a fantastic job of building an atmosphere that grabs your attention, there’s a lot of brutal moments that truly leave an impact on the viewer as well. Combine all of this with Darren Aronofsky who is one of the producers and you really have yourself a disturbing ride, this is one of those films where although a certain director is producing the film you can still feel their energy or their marks in this case Darren Aronofsky. Catch The Fair One is a revenge story that truly is one of the stronger ones, it’s an incredibly raw film that keeps things as grounded as possible. From the writing to the acting there’s so much to absolutely love about this one, if your a fan of the revenge genre be sure to watch this one once it releases!

Malcolm & Marie (2021)

A director and his girlfriend’s relationship is tested after they return home from his movie premiere and await critics’ responses.

Malcolm & Marie was one of my most anticipated films of 2021, I got the chance to see it early and I’m really happy about that because this film truly delivers. I especially got excited when Sam Levinson director of Assassination Nation and Euphoria said that Malcolm & Marie is going to be a lot like the first part of the Euphoria special Trouble Don’t Last Always. In a lot of ways Malcolm & Marie is a lot like that, in Trouble Don’t Last Always Coleman Domingo and Zendaya are both in one location which is a diner and they entire time they talk about their problems mostly tackling drug addiction. Malcolm & Marie has a couple Marie (Zendaya) and John David Washington (Malcolm) talking about a wide range of topics mostly about Malcolm’s film in one location which is there home. So there’s a lot of similarities and let me tell you Sam Levinson’s direction is unbelievable, it’s truly some of the best direction I’ve seen. I can’t put into words how much power Levinson’s direction has, he’s able to take two characters and create a raw, emotional story with them with some very impactful dialogue. The film is also shot entirely in black and white which really gives it a special feel to it, the writing is brutally honest and doesn’t sugarcoat anything. The conversations, disagreements, arguments that both Zendaya and John David Washington both have comes off as very real. The music also helps create the setting and atmosphere, which is no surprise given that the music is done by Labrinth who is also heavily involved in Euphoria. There’s also some very strong song choices that also match the scenes as well! Zendaya gives the performance of her career, she gives such an authentic performance and has tons of dialogue that’s incredibly impactful to the point where you are left speechless. The same can be said for John David Washington, he truly gives it his all and shows how much of a fantastic actor he really is, both Zendaya and John David Washington show a huge range of emotions and of their acting abilities it’s something that you don’t see very often in a lot of films. The film itself also feels like a hybrid of a throwback film to the classic movie era combined with a modern film, the atmosphere really captures all of that in 1 hour and 46 minutes. The parts of the film that focuses on Malcolm’s film really gives off as I said before a classic movie feel, while a lot of the other topics and the mood of the film gives off a modern movie feel. It’s a perfect balance where one doesn’t make the other feel less. Lastly there’s final dialogues where Zendaya gives her absolute best moments throughout the film, she really shows how incredible of an actress she really is and gives some of the most realistic pieces of acting I’ve seen. Overall Malcolm & Marie is a one of a kind experience, it’s something truly can’t be matched. I strongly believe this is going to get Zendaya nominated for best actress, after this performance she will be one of the favorites to win. John David Washington could also score a best actor nomination as well, as I said before he truly gives it his all. Sam Levinson could also get a best director nomination, before seeing the film I wasn’t 100% sure but after seeing the film I truly think he has a strong shot. Finally there’s the film itself while it is going to be a very tough year, Malcolm & Marie feels like one of the most authentic and overall one of the best of the best picture candidates. Malcolm & Marie is a film that a lot of people are going to absolutely love, I highly recommend checking this one out when it comes out February 5th 2021 on Netflix! This is going to be very hard to push off of my list of the top spot of the best film of 2021!
