The Prom (2020)

A troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.

I can perfectly understand why one would not like The Prom, the movie does have it’s heavy flaws mostly James Corden. Who is easily the worst part about this movie, his singing voice is awful and his acting it’s pretty poor. Aside from a few pacing problems (mostly at the beginning) I really enjoyed this movie. Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana DeBose for me were the highlights, both actresses are actually gay which I respect this film for casting actual actresses who are gay (although James Corden’s role should have went to a gay actor). This is Jo Ellen Pellman’s debut role in a film and for her first performance she did incredible, her chemistry with Ariana DeBose was really strong and hit all the notes it needed to. The music I have to say was really strong, there were a lot of notable songs that stood out. A lot of the songs matched the mood of the movie and the scenes that are taking place, something that quite honestly surprised me was Keegan-Michael Key’s singing voice, it was actually not too bad! The writing led to some really strong moments that gave some of the characters a lot of likability. I do wish the movie focused on Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana DeBose more because for me that’s where the movie shines. But overall The Prom is a very solid musical that I quite enjoyed, I recommend giving it a watch!!

Lupin III : The First (2020)

Lupin III goes on a grand adventure to uncover the secrets of the Bresson Diary, which is tied to the legacy of his famous grandfather.

I’ve always been a fan of Lupin The Third I feel in terms of anime it’s one of the more underrated ones, one of the ones that doesn’t get really talked about all that much. When I heard a 3D movie was going to happen I was pretty excited, the wait for this movie really killed me but it was worth it! It really translated well into 3D, the animation is absolutely gorgeous and the movement of the characters is extremely well done. The characters are really great as well, the source material is done with a lot of time and care. Plus the movie is a blast, sure there’s the Nazi plot that does get tired but the movie manages to keep things interesting and keeps the movie at a steady pace. It didn’t feel rushed at all, it knew what it was sent out to do and it accomplished just that. The writing is engaging and has some humorous moments that I actually found quite funny! Overall a really strong movie to a beloved series, I would definitely not mind seeing another one!!

Farewell Amor (2020)

Reunited after 17 years, an Angolan immigrant is joined in the U.S. by his wife and daughter. Now strangers sharing a one-bedroom apartment, they discover a shared love of dance that may help them overcome the distance between them.

Farewell Amor is a tale about a family being reunited after 17 years, it’s a very captivating story that keeps you invested to the characters the whole way through. What’s special about Farewell Amor is it gives you some perspective from each of the family members and what they feel or think about the reunion. It’s truly a beautiful film that captures a ton of emotions and ends on a beautiful note, the acting is quite great as well as the writing that felt very raw and down to earth. The actions of the family feel very genuine to the point where it’s almost like watching an actual family. Farewell Amor does suffer from a few script issues that could have been fixed, but it’s overall a very strong film that I highly recommend checking out.

I’m Your Woman (2020)

In this 1970s set crime drama, a woman is forced to go on the run after her husband betrays his partners, sending her and her baby on a dangerous journey.

I’m Your Woman definitely has it’s highlights and then it’s downsides, the cast and the filming are easily some of the best things about this movie. Rachel Brosnahan does a fantastic job in her role as well as Marsha Stephanie, the filming gives this movie sort of a POV type feel like we are being put into Jean’s (Rachel Brosnahan) mind. Which is pretty interesting and leads to some pretty great scenes, the problem however is the pacing feels incredibly uneven. Once I’m Your Woman hits the middle of the film it just comes to a stop, the middle drags on for quite sometime which ultimately does hurt the movie. It’s not that the middle of the film is bad it’s just not as interesting as the other sections of the film. I’m Your Woman does end on a high note with some well put together scenes that do standout. I do wish I’m Your Woman took a few more risks but for what the movie is it’s worth a watch.

Songbird (2020)

In 2024 a pandemic ravages the world and its cities. Centering on a handful of people as they navigate the obstacles currently hindering society: disease, martial law, quarantine, and vigilantes.

What happens when you take an actual event that is currently going on and bring in Michael Bay and Adam Mason? You get a disaster which is exactly what Songbird is, in the movie COVID-23 (how original) is currently going on and this movie goes out of it’s way to be insensitive as possible. You know how conspiracy theorists are saying like “the government is taking our rights away by having a lockdown!” Well Songbird is as if one of those conspiracy theorists became a screenwriter and wrote a movie. What’s really strange to me is the cast, how on earth did Demi Moore and Sofia Carson get dragged into this? Bradley Whitford and Alexandra Daddario is for whatever reason is in this movie as well and not one of them is able to save this movie, the acting and writing are complete garbage. It really feels like nobody gave a crap while on set and just went with what they got, which leads me to the director Adam Mason. Who has continuously shown that he can’t direct a movie and this is quite possibly his worst, at least with some of his other movies they can be written off as terrible straight to video horror movies. Songbird takes itself way too seriously and has no atmosphere, it’s all done in very poor taste too a lot of the movie is fear mongering and flat out disrespectful. How anyone working on this movie didn’t stop and say “you know what releasing this is a bad idea” is absolutely incredible to me. The direction from Adam Mason is just horrible not once did I give a crap about any of the characters, nobody gave a decent performance and none of it felt believable. The movie is filled to the brim of terrible choices the characters make, really ridiculous writing and atrocious subplots. Even if you took away COVID-19 Songbird is still a horrendous movie, it feels like your typical apocalyptic type movie but much worse. Overall there really isn’t much else to say about Songbird is a waste of time and one of the worst films of the year, please stop making garbage films like this that are based off of the pandemic.

Safety (2020)

The story of Ray-Ray McElrathbey, a freshman football player for Clemson University, who secretly raised his younger brother on campus after his home life became too unsteady.

Safety is another one of those inspirational stories that really don’t have anything new to bring to the table, the true story itself is very inspiring and I definitely recommend looking up the actual story. The movie however at times feels like a huge chore to sit through it’s 122 minutes long which it honestly did not need to be. Jay Reeves and the rest of the cast do a fine enough job given that the script they got was nothing really too special. A lot of the film just felt way too safe (no pun intended) it was your basic inspirational movie cliches that any viewer can easily recognize. There are some genuine heartfelt moments that do work pretty well, but those take a lot of patience to get to, with that said the movie definitely isn’t bad. It’s just a movie that I don’t think I’ll ever watch again, it’s one of those Disney+ movies that could have easily been a Disney channel original but they decided to put it on Disney+. If it sounds like your type of movie check it out, otherwise don’t rush to watch it.

Alex Wheatle (2020)

Alex Wheatle (Sheyi Cole), from a young boy through his early adult years. Having spent his childhood in a mostly white institutional care home with no love or family, he finally finds not only a sense of community for the first time in Brixton, but his identity and ability to grow his passion for music and DJ’ing. When he is thrown in prison during the Brixton Uprising of 1981, he confronts his past and sees a path to healing.

Alex Wheatle is the fourth of the five part series of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe Series…and it’s hands down the weakest. The story itself is interesting and it’s based off of a true story, the problem is the movie itself really isn’t as powerful as the other movies in the series. The acting from Sheyi Cole is really strong and everyone else in the film does a fantastic job as well. Which ultimately does help Alex Wheatle stand, one of the major issues is the fact the film is way too short. It has a runtime of 66 minutes which is barely enough time to really do anything really special, especially if you are going for a topic like the true story of Alex Wheatle. Lovers Rock got away with using s small runtime of 70 minutes mostly do to it’s story being more expansive, it wasn’t about a particular person. So it could really expand on anything it wanted, plus a shorter runtime definitely helped that movie out. Here the shorter runtime just doesn’t work for Alex Wheatle, while yes it is a very decent movie that I still recommend watching it is just nowhere near as good as the previous three movies in the series.

Wander Darkly and Let Them All Talk (2020)

New parents Adrienne and Matteo are forced to reckon with trauma amidst their troubled relationship. They must revisit the memories of their past and unravel haunting truths in order to face their uncertain future.

Wander Darkly is about trauma and a troubled relationship that both parties have went through. Siernna Miller and Diego Luna both do a fantastic job in their roles, both give performances that feel very realistic and captivating. The story itself is very interesting and has a lot of great ideas that the movie for the most part does a pretty good job with. I do wish Wander Darkly went a little deeper with the trauma, while we do explore the character’s trauma the movie doesn’t necessarily dive very deep into it. Which could have really helped this movie out a lot more, however that does not mean it’s bad at all. It has a ton of beautiful and emotional moments that truly do shine, I see Wander Darkly being compared to Eternal Sunshine in some cases I definitely see that. It’s just not as good as Eternal Sunshine, the acting and writing as I’ve said are very good! The writing can be repetitive at times and can be somewhat predictable. Overall Wander Darkly is a very solid movie, it could have been a lot better had it took more time to explore the characters but it’s still something I would recommend giving a look!

A famous author goes on a cruise trip with her friends and nephew in an effort to find fun and happiness while she comes to terms with her troubled past.

People really need to stop overhyping Meryl Streep with every single performance, she’s a great actress but I’m tired of people acting like she is flawless when films like Let Them All Talk exists. She gives a very decent performance but that’s about it, there is absolutely nothing here that stands out at all. Let Them All Talk is also one of those films where the story is just not that interesting, for some people it might but this just did not work for me. It had plenty of good ideas but it ultimately really fell flat. The writing wasn’t anything particularly interesting, I completely get what the film was trying to go for but it just did not work. The conversations the characters have did not come off as authentic, there’s a few moments that work but it’s overall a mess. This is definitely better than Steven Soderbergh’s last film The Laundromat (you know the film where Streep does brown face) but that’s honestly not high compliment.

Parallel and Archenemy (2020)

A group of friends stumble upon a mirror that serves as a portal to a “multiverse”, but soon discover that importing knowledge from the other side in order to better their lives brings increasingly dangerous consequences.

There is really not much to be said about Parallel, the ideas themselves are definitely more interesting than the film. It really has no idea what it truly wants to be. The acting and writing play way too safe and never take any interesting directions, the film is just sort of there and falls into several cliches. There’s some fun to be had but that’s very far and few in between to the point where it’s just not worth your time.

Max Fist claims to be a hero from another dimension who fell through time and space to earth, where he has no powers. No one believes his stories except for a local teen named Hamster.

Yikes what happened here? I gave Adam Egypt Mortimer flack for Some Kind Of Hate which I absolutely hated, he made a massive improvement with Daniel Isn’t Real which I quite liked…Archenemy is a disappointment. It’s one of those movies that attempts to be a superhero movie but doesn’t offer any new or interesting ideas. It sort of just does the bare minimum and calls it a day, the acting is definitely fine enough everyone involved did the best they could. The writing is a major issue however, there’s some humor that’s just sort of thrown in where it doesn’t belong. When the movie is actually trying to tell the story a lot of it is either stuff we have seen before but done better or just not very interesting. It also doesn’t help that the character development is just not good here, we learn almost nothing about the characters at all and the movie pretty much assumes you learned so much about them. I will say that it’s very decently made and the animation bits are interesting and definitely standout, but it’s ultimately not enough to save this movie.

Sound of Metal (2020)

A heavy-metal drummer’s life is thrown into freefall when he begins to lose his hearing.

Sound Of Metal is truly eye opening it really shows how much we take for granted in this case with hearing, losing your sense to hear is truly devastating it’s something that can truly make your life much harder especially when your at a very young age such as the main protagonist, Riz Ahmed plays Ruben a heavy metal drummer who loses his hearing and slowly realizes how much his life is changing since he lost his hearing, first off I really think it’s incredible that Riz Ahmed was taught sign language from people who are experts at it, I truly find that beautiful. Plus the film also casts actual deaf actors and actresses in the film as well! Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci are both fantastic in the supporting roles I’ve been a huge fan of Cooke for awhile now and I truly hope this lands her a best supporting actress role. Riz Ahmed is truly something special, every single moment he’s on screen he does a fantastic job, he gives one of the most raw and emotional performances of the year and should be a lock for a best actor nomination. Something that absolutely needs to be mentioned is the audio there’s tons of moments when there’s muffled audio, complete silence, the audio being extremely loud and more. It gives the viewer a POV of being what it’s like to be going deaf and slowly losing your hearing. It makes the film realistic as possible and at the same time scares the viewer. The filming is absolutely beautiful, it goes for this realistic style that is just captivating and some of the most beautiful filming of the year. The film shows how losing something you truly need for a career or for basic interaction can go away and how much harder your life can be. We often take these things for granted, I spent days thinking how powerful Sound Of Metal really is, it’s something that absolutely everybody must see. Hands down one of if not the best film of the year!
