Moffie (2021) Movie Review!

A young man in 1981 South Africa must complete his brutal and racist two years of compulsory military service while desperately maintaining the secrecy of his homosexuality.

Moffie is a powerful and meaningful war coming of age film. It’s a movie about a young man struggling to accept himself while he’s in a very torturous environments in this case being in a war and battlegrounds. When you take those two elements together it truly creates something haunting and emotional all at the same time, Kai Luke Brummer does a fantastic job in the leading role, he absolutely delivers on every single level and gives a beautiful performance that really leaves a huge impact on you. The use of coming of age story during war and other dangerous situations is really well done here, you can feel Nicholas’s pain and how he is trying to manage it. Moffie also has very beautiful writing, directing and filming as well each feel as authentic as possible and make this film unique in it’s own ways! Moffie is definitely going to be a hidden gem of 2021, check this one out when you can!

Thunder Force (2021) Movie Review!

In a world where supervillains are commonplace, two estranged childhood best friends reunite after one devises a treatment that gives them powers to protect their city.

It seems like every single person and their grandmother is throwing their hat in the ring when it comes to superhero movies, so here’s Ben Falcone’s attempt at one because why not? Thunder Force starts out promising enough but then quickly falls into the typical Ben Falcone Melissa McCarthy comedy, every single element, joke and more are in this movie that were in his previous movies. Thunder Force might not be as painful as Tammy or as bad as Superintelligence but oh god that doesn’t mean anything. Octavia Spencer does a fine enough job heck even Melissa McCarthy isn’t too bad this time around. The problem is the writing plus just how forced and terrible it really is, all of the jokes are the exact same thing it’s either Melissa McCarthy falling over (wow we have never seen that before!) or a joke that goes on for a painfully uncomfortable amount of time to the point where it just gets awkward. Jason Bateman gives a “it’s so bad it’s funny” performance which I guess is welcoming because the rest of this movie is just not funny. The superhero elements aren’t anything interesting either a lot of it is just very surface level which is fine I wasn’t expecting anything incredible. But the movie doesn’t do anything fun with it, there could have been something here if there was an entirely different handling this movie. But it’s basically another Ben Falcone plus Melissa McCarthy comedy…

City Of Lies (2021) Movie Review!

Russell Poole and Jack Jackson investigate the murders of rappers Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.

City Of Lies is one of those movies that has a more interesting history than the movie itself. City Of Lies you may recognize and could almost swear this came out years ago, but this was originally supposed to come out September 7th 2018 the 22nd anniversary of the Murder of Tupac Shakur it was pulled due to a lawsuit between Johnny Depp and the film’s location manager a lot of theories were suggested that this was a cover up and that the LAPD may have been trying to suppress the film at least to my knowledge nobody has commented on any of the theories. Saban films eventually got the rights to the movie and here we are now…and it’s a very forgettable movie. I’m going to be honest here there is not a whole lot to be said at all about City Of Lies. Johnny Depp tries to do the best he can but it ultimately just does not work at all, the filming is pretty decent and there was definitely some attempt to try and make this work. But a lot of it is just not that interesting, as a lot of people have pointed how for a movie that is about the murder of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. two of the most famous rappers of all time the movie is very forgettable. The writing has it’s moments but a lot of the time the movie feels like it’s going through an identity crisis, it has no idea what it wants to be and by the end kind of just gives up. I don’t think City Of Lies is particularly a terrible movie but it is most definitely a very forgettable one.

The Power and Held (2021) Movie Reviews.

1973: a young nurse is forced to work the night shift in a crumbling hospital as striking miners switch off the power across Britain. But inside the walls lurks a terrifying presence that threatens to consume her and everyone around her.

I really don’t have much to say here, The Power is your by the numbers horror movie that relied way too much on jumpscares. Which is disappointing because it did quite a bit right, the atmosphere combined with the setting (creepy hospital) was effective, the acting was overall not too bad and the pacing was quite alright. The jumpscares and the movie’s predictably completely hold it back from being anything other then below average. The twist while interesting was a bit predictable and the characters really did not have much too them at all. The writing has it’s ups and downs, at some points it’s quite interesting and at others not so much. The Power is another Shudder Original that definitely at potential but missed the mark. Had this movie been worked on just a bit more this could have been something great.

5/10 C

A couple’s ailing marriage is put to the test when they are held hostage in an isolated vacation rental by an unseen Voice that commands their every move.

I was originally going to skip this movie (mostly because I had no idea it existed) but then something caught my eye….the directors. Both of which are the directors who did both “The Gallows” movies, which are both terrible movies so I knew I had to check this one to see if it’s an improvement. The good news it is….but the bad news is by not much. Held is basically this week’s straight to VOD terrible and forgettable thriller. It has nothing new to offer and is pretty much a stupid version of Saw. It tries to use elements from the first Saw movie but miserably fails while doing it, the characters aren’t interesting, the writing is nowhere near as clever and the movie itself is very predictable. The acting isn’t too bad which is probably the best thing I can say about this movie otherwise it’s just not worth watching at all.

Shiva Baby (2021) Movie Review!

At a Jewish funeral service with her parents, a college student runs into her sugar daddy.

Shiva Baby is one of the most chaotic, stressful and anxiety inducing films I’ve seen in quite awhile and I mean that in the most positive way possible. The film captures so much In only 77 minutes and manages to be quite chaotic, first off the acting is just incredible. Every single performance feels authentic it was almost like you were at the funeral service. However the performances that stood out to me were Rachel Sennott who I’m sure is going to go on to have a excellent career and Molly Gordon! Both have incredible chemistry with one another and like everyone else feel very authentic. Especially with Rachel Sennott’s performance she puts so much strength to her role and it eventually builds up to scenes with tons of anxiety inducing scenes that feel claustrophobic, which I actually related with quite well. You know that feeling at a gathering and too many people are talking to you at once, so you zone out and then just break down? That I related to so well, it’s happened to me multiple times before and the way Shiva Baby portrays that very situation is just as anxiety inducing and chaotic as it really is. Emma Seligman does a flawless job as the director and writer, she brings as much realism as possible to this film. Seligman takes a gathering and makes it as real as possible, a majority of Shiva Baby is set at a Jewish funeral service and really does fantastic job of showing each and every detail. The combination of the film exploring bisexuality and anxiety is masterful, there’s so much care and careful analysis the different situations that take place during the film and Rachel Sennott’s character Danielle. It’s worth noting that Emma Seligman is Jewish and bisexual herself so that would definitely explain why there was so much care put into this film, it feels like it’s a personal film. A story that Emma Seligman is telling you about to me those are some of the best type of films. While the writing is chaotic and anxiety inducing there’s a lot of hilarious moments in the film that I was definitely not expecting. It’s a real nice balance between humorous moments and the stressful moments, there’s a little bit of everything in the film which makes it standout from a lot of other films that try to do the same thing. Overall Shiva Baby is so far my favorite film of 2021, it’s truly a beautifully made film that has some of the best character development, writing and use of several themes of 2021! I highly recommend giving this one a watch as soon as possible!

Godzilla Vs Kong (2021) Movie Review.

The epic next chapter in the cinematic Monsterverse pits two of the greatest icons in motion picture history against one another – the fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong – with humanity caught in the balance.

Now this is more what I am talking about, Godzilla Vs Kong is vastly superior to the previous film in the monsterverse Godzilla King Of The Monsters (when I first saw it I liked it but it does not hold up on a rewatch.) first off let’s talk about the action scenes, which I thought were so much better, I believe that’s mainly due to most of the action scenes taking place during the day rather then a stormy day or night like a lot of what King Of The Monsters was. Not only that but the scenes were just better filmed, felt more clean and looked like there was actual care, a lot of focus on what’s going on ect. I thought the human characters were actually a lot better, they were definitely not perfect. But there was a very noticeable improvement, Brian Tyree Henry I thought was a standout. While not every line he was given was very good he did a pretty decent job with the delivery, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall I were also pretty decent again not every line was great but they still got the job done. Which does lead me to the writing, again it is a lot better than King Of The Monsters but there is a schlock that could have been either cut out altogether or changed up a bit. As far as the direction this is Adam Wingard’s best in awhile, it’s great to see Wingard still has it after the disappointing Blaire Witch sequel and the trainwreck Death Note. Godzilla Vs Kong felt like the old Wingard who directed fantastic films like You’re Next and The Guest! Wingard did a really great job when it came to build up, he built up each action scene really well and told a straightforward story as well. Godzilla Vs Kong is exactly what you expect it to be a monster film that is a ton of fun and at the same time it’s a great movie. Godzilla and King Kong are fantastic and look as incredible as ever, this is a blast of fun! I highly recommend giving this one a go!

The Father (2020) Movie Review.

A man refuses all assistance from his daughter as he ages. As he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality.

So the last movie on my 2020 movies list, did I save the best last? Well definitely one of the best because The Father is quite incredible, let’s get the obvious out of the way Anthony Hopkins is brilliant in his role, he was the perfect choice for this movie. He adds to the realism of the film itself, it’s a very detailed showcase of how bad Alzheimer’s and Dementia can really be. I’ve heard horrifying stories from friends who have had family members who have went through this and a lot of what was shown here definitely matches what I was told. Hopkins just adds so much rawness and emotion to his role, the moments where he’s silent and just blankly starting are the most horrifying and powerful scenes of the film, it truly gets to you and invests the viewer in. At some points in the movie you are wondering “what’s real and what isn’t” it gives you an experience of what Alzheimer’s and Dementia are and how terrifying they are. Olivia Colman also does a fantastic job in her role and really goes all out with her talent as well as the rest of the cast. The writing is absolutely beautifully written, it’s written with so much care on a very heavy subject that most definitely will make you depressed at times. That’s something I really appreciate the film for, handling it’s subject matter with care. This could have been a case where it could have been handled poorly and would have been a lot of misinformation or come off like it has no idea what it’s talking about. But that’s not the case here, clearly everyone involved did their research and created something truly special. Which leads back to the writing and how raw it feels, It feels like you are watching someone go through this horrible situation. It’s very depressing to watch and definitely will make some audiences feel uncomfortable, but I do think this is one of the best films about Alzheimer’s or Dementia! Be sure to check this one out when you can!!

Concrete Cowboy (2021) Movie Review!

Sent to live with his estranged father for the summer, a rebellious teen finds kinship in a tight-knit Philadelphia community of Black cowboys.

Concrete Cowboy is a very sweet movie, it has tons of really touching moments that are helped by a magnificent cast such as Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin as well as many others! The acting is quite fantastic and feels incredibly raw that really gives the audience some powerful moments, the story is very well told even if the movie does lose it’s steam at the third act. The writing feels grounded and keeps things interesting with several touching moments that are bound to put a smile on your face. The end of the movie shows some small clips of the actual cowboys and cowgirls it’s some really interesting piece of history, even if this movie is a fictionalization it’s still based on a piece of history that’s still around today! The movie does a pretty good job of telling about the culture, what they do, why they decided to be cowboys and cowgirls and much more. The story can be unfocused at times but that isn’t enough to stop this movie from being great. Because it’s a very solid movie that I recommend!

Chaos Walking (2021) Movie Review!

A dystopian world where there are no women and all living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts in a stream of images, words, and sounds called Noise.

2021 is definitely not Doug Liman’s year, first there was LockedDown and now Chaos Walking. To be fair Chaos Walking has had many release dates in the past but was delayed for various reasons. The best way to describe Chaos Walking is that it’s another YA Sci-Fi adaption, it feels like a movie that should have came out years ago and it strangely feels very outdated. The only positives this movie has going for it is Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland, the performances were definitely not good at all but at least they tried with what they had. The huge problem with this movie is the waste of a good cast and some great ideas, the movie uses those ideas in the most bare bones way possible and doesn’t really bother with character development or try to develop these ideas. Instead it feels like a chore to sit through and doesn’t say or do anything interesting at all, some of the scenes in the movie you can easily tell they were reshoots which really shows a level of not caring at all. Doug Liman’s direction is terrible, there’s no style, no sense of trying to make the characters interesting and definitely no attempt to make this good either. I’m not sure what exactly happened to Liman (for god sake he directed Edge Of Tomorrow one of my favorite films of the 2010s) but good lord this feels like a huge step down from some of his other work. Then there’s the pacing…this felt way too long even though it was 109 minute long, the movie hits a wall after the first 20 minutes and gets slower and slower. I really don’t have much else to say Chaos Walking is another YA adaption that’s going to be easily forgotten, give this one a pass.

Every Breath You Take (2021) Movie Review!

A psychiatrist, whose client commits suicide, finds his family life disrupted after introducing her surviving brother to his wife and daughter.

Every Breath You Take I feel would have been okay….if it came out in the 90s or early 2000s. It feels like a bad cable movie you would catch on TV on a Saturday evening. There really isn’t much to say here to be quite honest, the acting is very okay at best with Casey Affleck trying to give a good performance but this is easily one of his weakest. The movie never really goes anywhere at all, it starts off way too slow and ultimately stops dead in it’s tracks towards the end. Although I will say the ending was actually not too bad, the main problem with this movie is it’s a thriller that has nothing noteworthy about it. The only reason why this movie got some sort of attention is because of the cast, without the cast this movie would have gotten no attention at all. The cast is the only reason why I even bothered with this movie and it’s definitely the best thing about the movie. Plus the filming is at least pretty decent with some interesting shots, but everything else such as the writing, directing and so on are a complete mess and don’t add up to anything great.
