Kate is another Netflix action movie misfire.

A female assassin has 24 hours to get vengeance on her murderer before she dies.

Kate is what happens when you follow every single action movie plot line and do absolutely nothing new with it. Outside of Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson’s performances, a few action scenes that are admittedly pretty well shot and a few shots that are actually quite beautiful. Kate is really nothing special at all, what stops this movie dead in it’s tracks is the writing. Which quickly leads into a big mess that the movie never recovers from, Cedric Nicolas -Troyan (director of The Huntsman: Winter’s War) is in the director’s chair and while I can see that he definitely at least tried to make this work, it ultimately comes down to the script being very very weak and has no room for something interesting or new. Speaking of which the movie itself isn’t interesting at the slightest, it feels like another action movie where they get a few recognizable names and put them in a typical action movie scenario. It’s very unfortunate because I do feel movies like Kate have the potential but the effort isn’t just being put into it. Overall Kate is a very forgettable action movie that while does have it’s moments it fails to stand out among the crowd.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is both compelling and a solid addition to the MCU!

Martial-arts master Shang-Chi confronts the past he thought he left behind when he’s drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

Shang-Chi was definitely a surprise for me, from the trailers they really played this like your typical MCU origin story that was going to just sort of exist and that would be the end of it. That is not the case with Shang-Chi in fact it does far far more than just being an origin story! The cast does quite an incredible job Simu Liu, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Meng’ er Zhang and Michelle Yeoh especially! Speaking of which Tony Leung Chiu-wai is great as the villain which is Mandarin. He’s one of the better MCU villains that actually got development although it could have been a bit more. The action scenes are what really make this movie, particularly the combat which a ton of scenes use martial arts. One scene in particular (if you have seen it you will immediately know which one I’m talking about) is truly beautiful, the filming, the acting and marital arts. It all adds into that scene to truly make it standout and turn it into something the MCU really hasn’t done before, Shang-Chi also does have a lot of heart as well as there are some very touching moments between the characters. Writing wise the first two acts in particular are very strong, some of the best of phase four in the MCU so far. The flaws come in with the final act which while it’s definitely not bad, it feels a little bit rushed at times and sort of falls apart in a lot of moments. The CGI has it’s weird moments where it’s quite great while in others it doesn’t look so great. But overall Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a huge surprise for me, director Destin Daniel Cretton did a very solid job with this film! Definitely check it out!

Cinderella (2021) fails at being a good adaption and fails at being a decent movie.

A modern movie musical with a bold take on the classic fairy tale. Our ambitious heroine has big dreams and with the help of her fab Godmother, she perseveres to make them come true.

Cinderella (2021) did manage to do one thing…unite all sides or Twitter to absolutely destroy it, that aside this new adaption of Cinderella truly feels like a complete waste of time. Billy Porter (who is barely in the movie) and Idina Menzel (at times) are the only two positives I can give this movie, the rest of it is a huge mess. First off Camila Cabello’s performance is one of the most nothing special about it performances I’ve seen so far this year, I just didn’t buy Camila as Cinderella had this been some other performance than maybe. Almost all of the songs were covers….bad covers, trying to combine songs like Rhythm Nation into a Cinderella story just feels way too out of place and completely takes you out of the movie. Don’t even get me started on the jokes, if I have to hear James Corden talking about how proud he is of his “front tail” ever again I swear I’m going to quit reviewing films. The jokes in this movie are some of the most unfunny and painful I’ve listened to in recent memory, which only shocks me because Kay Cannon who directed Blockers is the director. While I’m not one of those people who found Blockers hysterical i at least found it to be one of the better modern comedies. Then there’s the whole look of the movie, it feels very cheaply made (the CGI on the mice look like they are from a very early PS2 game). I appreciate at times the movie was trying to do something a little bit different but the problem is the movie fails at that as well, this version of Cinderella also tries to shoehorn this whole “girlboss” narrative into it but that falls flat as well. There’s no build up, no character development or any really growth. Overall Cinderella (2021) completely misses it fails as an adaption of Cinderella (can we please stop with Cinderella adaptions?) and it fails at being an actual decent movie. You are better off watching any other Cinderella story that came before this one.

Karen…one of the biggest trainwrecks.

A racist woman takes it as a personal mission to displace the new black family that just moved into the neighborhood, but they won’t back down without a fight.

I’m not going to waste my energy on this movie because quite frankly I think it speaks for itself. I’m pretty sure I speak for everyone when I say nobody wanted this, Karen is exactly what it sounds like. A racist white woman wants displace a black family who just moved next door, I didn’t want to believe this would actually be a movie but here we are I guess, for starters the acting, writing and directing are all complete garbage, it truly feels like a movie that was supposed to be on The LifeTime channel but for whatever reason got shoved on to VOD. The movie takes itself seriously which I find to be one of the worst parts about it, had this been maybe a parody or satire like poking fun of racists this MIGHT have had a chance (although with that script I doubt it this movie was doomed from the start.) the movie also isn’t subtle at all, between the music and it’s writing it feels like nobody gave crap at all and just threw something together. But what seals this movie’s fate is it has nothing new or interesting to say at all, it exploits racial discrimination that’s seen on a daily basis. Hands down one of the worst movies I’ve seen so far this year.

Worth is both interesting and emotional when it comes to interview scenes!

An attorney in Washington D.C. battles against cynicism, bureaucracy and politics to help the victims of 9/11.

Worth is a pretty solid movie that tells the true story of lawyer Kenneth Feinberg who battles a ton of obstacles to help the victims of 9/11. Michael Keaton and Stanley Tucci both give very solid performances, Worth is at it’s best when it focuses on the victims of 9/11 particularly the interview scenes. It has a lot of human interaction during those scenes and has a huge sense of rawness to it as well, that ultimately make this movie an emotional ride at times. I do wish the writing could have been a bit stronger in some areas, particularly the first act that does take a bit to get going. Worth is overall a solid enough movie that is quite interesting and delivers the emotional moments quite well.

Worth is now available on Netflix!

Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter To Los Angeles: A Billie Eilish Concert Experience is beautifully put together with many different styles blended into one.

Grammy Award-winning and chart-topping artist Billie Eilish will make her Disney+ debut with “Happier than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles,” a cinematic concert experience.

There really isn’t a whole lot to this one so I’ll keep this short, I’m glad these concert movies aren’t going away because this one has to be among one of the best. It’s a beautifully put together film of Billie Eilish’s music from her “Happier Than Ever” album, the editing is top notch as well as filming. Both combined truly give it a beautifully hypnotic look to it, Robert Rodriguez is actually one of the directors the other director being Patrick Osborne. Both of which combine their styles to truly give something quite beautiful, the animated portions are quite gorgeous and give all types of emotions as well. The songs are all fantastic, Billie Eilish is one of the most interesting singers currently working today and it really shows here, she’s incredibly talented and gives her songs their own identity. Overall this is a very strong concert film that although is only 65 minutes long is still a beautiful experience that must be seen!

Don’t Breathe 2 is a uninspired sequel that is confused about what it wants to be.

The sequel is set in the years following the initial deadly home invasion, where Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) lives in quiet solace until his past sins catch up to him.

Don’t Breathe was a surprise hit back in 2016, director Fede Álvarez gave something truly different and refreshing to the home invasion genre. Don’t Breathe also shocked audiences (myself included) with one scene in particular, it’s something you don’t see very often with a lot of movies. A sequel was talked about and I was personally really excited for it, however the more that came out about it the less excitement it got. Don’t Breathe 2 feels like one of those sequels that was just made because the first one did well, Stephen Lang at least does a decent job here but it’s truly not enough to save the movie. The movie attempts to try and make Stephen Lang’s character some sort of anti-hero which just feels completely strange and messed up given what we know from the last movie, it doesn’t help that it feels incredibly forced as well. Don’t Breathe 2 really fails to grab the attention of the audience mostly due to how empty it feels, all it does is show some kills, a terrible redemption arc for Stephen Lang’s character and then the movie ends. There are some decent shots and I will say the movie is decently made, a lot of it just doesn’t come together at all. Overall Don’t Breathe 2 is a dull sequel that fails to live up to the first movie. Give this one a skip!

Ted Bundy: American Boogyman is another disaster from Daniel Farrands.

Detective Kathleen McChesney and rookie FBI profiler Robert Ressler search for a vicious serial killer in the 1970s.

If you have been following me for awhile you will probably recognize the name “Daniel Farrands” because of me talking about how garbage each of his movies are. If you don’t know who Farrands is allow me to briefly explain, Farrands pretty much takes somebodies tragic story and proceeds to make a tasteless movie out of it. He’s done The Haunting Of Sharon Tate which he turned into a what if scenario with slasher elements, The Amityville Murders which was another garbage Amityville movie and last year’s The Murder Of Nicole Brown Simpson which you guessed it is a tasteless movie about about Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder. Now we have a movie about Ted Bundy, which I will say is by far his best movie to date however that is really not saying much. It at least portrays Ted Bundy as a creep rather than some charming gentleman, but everything else about this movie is garbage. The writing is terrible and has nothing interesting to say, the acting feels like something out of a failed high school film project. Farrands continues to prove he’s one of the worst directors working today, his directing style has absolutely no originality at all and is over reliant on other people’s tragic stories. Despite showing Ted Bundy as a creep it still doesn’t save the movie at all, Chad Michael Murray’s performance isn’t good he is definitely trying to work with what he’s given but it’s ultimately not enough. Lastly the movie itself is overall very poorly crafted, it feels like Farrands saw other Ted Bundy movies wanted to copy those and failed horribly at it. It also fails at bringing anything interesting or new to the table, there’s far better Ted Bundy movies out there and this one feels completely empty. Overall Ted Bundy: American Boogyman is one of the worst movies of the year and is definitely something to avoid. Watch No Man Of God if you want an actual really good recent film about Ted Bundy.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle Of The Realms is a solid follow up to Scorpion’s Revenge!

The heroes must travel to Outworld to defend Earthrealm as Scorpion searches for the ancient Kamidogu before it’s used to resurrect the One Being.

Mortal Kombat Legends Battle Of The Realms is a sequel to Scorpion’s Revenge which came out last year and was even in my best list. Battle Of The Realms is more of a traditional Mortal Kombat movie, as in it focuses a lot less on backstories and more on the tournament and action itself. In some ways this helps the movie and in others it kind of hurts it. For starters the animation is quite great, it’s very detailed and adds a lot to the gore and fatalities. Although the characters don’t get the most development this time around, they are all still a lot of fun and are backed up with very strong voice acting. Battle Of The Realms does go a little too bonkers towards the end such as having Liu Kang go full on Super Saiyan (which kind of just happens out of nowhere). Overall Battle Of The Realms is a very straightforward Mortal Kombat movie that will please fans of the franchise, It might not be as good as Scorpion’s Revenge but it’s still a solid time!

Candyman (2021) is a solid sequel that showcases Nia DaCosta’s directing ability!

In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, Anthony and his partner move into a loft in the now gentrified Cabrini. A chance encounter with an old-timer exposes Anthony to the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to use these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, he unknowingly opens a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence.

Candyman is a sequel to the 1992 film ignoring the other movies of the series, Candyman I have been looking forward to for awhile now especially since it was delayed due to COVID. The acting was really solid the standouts being Teyonah Parris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Colman Domingo, they all give great performances that really make this movie. Combine that with Nia DaCosta’s directing which gives this film a haunting atmosphere that has some truly effective moments, the visuals are what surprised me the most. I truly didn’t expect the visuals to be anything noteworthy but DaCosta has a very interesting eye for visual style and it truly works here, she takes some certain shots such as of a building and turns into a rather creepy experience. The gore is pretty solid as well, the kills while simple are still great (there’s quite a few of them too). Candyman does have it’s flaws the biggest one being the final act, while I thought it was a interesting idea on paper. Unfortunately it felt very rushed and the movie just ran out of steam by the time it got to the third act, the story went all over the place and it really loses the audience. Which is a shame up until the third act the film was pretty solid when it came to storytelling, however that’s the only main issue with Candyman I have! Everything else is great and does what it’s set out to do, it does disappoint in some areas but in others it’s quite great. It really shows how talented Nia DaCosta is as a filmmaker, I recommend checking it out!!
