She Will is a hauntingly beautiful slow burn horror film.

An ageing film star retreats to the Scottish countryside with her nurse to recover from surgery. While there, mysterious forces of revenge emerge from the land where witches were burned.

She Will is a very slow burn horror film but the patience from the viewer is absolutely worth it here, Alice Krige gives a fascinating performance in the leading role and captures the atmosphere of the film quite well. The film mostly tells it’s story through it’s filming, atmosphere and horror elements all of which when combined together telling a fascinating story that adds depth to the characters. The characters are also a key element here that tell the story particularly Veronica Ghent (Alice Krige) who’s past we learn about as well as her trauma, the score combined with the filming creates a very eerie atmosphere that may not leave you jump out of your seat scared. But it will be haunting and at the same time quite beautiful, the direction from Charlotte Colbert is truly impressive and It is clear Colbert knows how to give a film a haunting atmosphere. Overall She Will is not going to be for everyone but for fans of slow burn horror films this will be a very solid film.

She Will is available on all VOD Platforms.

Ms. Marvel is a fun and emotional addition to the MCU!

Kamala is a superhero fan with an imagination, particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel; Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home, that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s looked up to.

Ms. Marvel is another addition to the MCU and Disney+ Shows and there was a bit of controversy among fans before this came out. Mostly because for whatever reason they made the decision to change Ms. Marvel’s powers which is an important element in the comics that adds to her character, luckily the show does manage to bring some emotional scenes that are surprisingly well done despite the change. However the change does hurt the show during the middle of the season, mainly because they have to gather so many different ideas together and it sort of loses it’s footing. The acting is overall pretty decent but Iman Vellani is the clear standout she completely captures the personality and actions of Kamala Khan it’s truly one of the best casting decisions the MCU has made so far. The parts where there’s quiet scenes involved and the series dives into her character are the highlights and actually give this show some depth. Like Moon Knight I will give this show credit where credit is due that it did not rely on cameos (I mean there’s one but that’s during the end credits at the final episode so that doesn’t count, plus I actually didn’t mind that one since it does have a purpose of being there) to tell a story. Instead they stuck with the characters of the series and told a decent story, if there’s one main flaw it has to be the middle of the season, this is something that a lot of these MCU shows struggle with. They have a very messy middle that really hurts the pacing, it mainly came down to the show throwing way too many ideas in the series with way too much going on at the same time. But the series does get the emotional bits back during the final episode and wraps up decently, it’s a very nice set up for next years The Marvels. Overall Ms. Marvel is a decent show that does have it’s bumps in the road that stops it from being a lot better, but from what was presented there’s entertainment to be had as well as some very strong emotional bits.

Orders From Above a powerful interrogation of Adolf Eichmann.

Architect of the Final Solution, Adolf Eichmann, is finally captured and brought to Israel to stand trail for his crimes. Without enough evidence to prosecute him, Police Captain Avner Less is tasked with extracting a confession from the mastermind of the Holocaust.

Orders From Above is a very straightforward film that immediately gets to the point, the whole film is 15 years after World War II Israeli police officer Avnet Less interrogates Adolf Eichmann who was the person who came up with the Holocaust. The film is shot entirely in black and white which adds to the atmosphere to the film, it’s a very raw piece that explains Eichmann’s crimes. As Eichmann constantly denies that he was the mastermind behind the Holocaust, Less keeps pushing him and even showing videos of what he’s done. Richard Cotter who plays Avnet Less and Peter J Donnelly who plays Adolf Eichmann are both fantastic, they give powerful performances and the interrogation conversations are masterfully performed, when Eichmann is shown videos of his crimes (which are actual real videos and photos of Holocaust victims so be warned if you plan on watching this film it does get a bit disturbing), Donnelly truly knocks it out of the park with his performance. The writing is truly powerful with tons of striking moments that grab the viewer’s attention, overall Orders From Above is raw, powerful and disturbing. I highly recommend checking this one out!

Orders From Above is available on all VOD Platforms.

Valley Of The Dead is a beat by beat bad zombie movie.

During the Spanish Civil War, sworn enemies must work together when they encounter flesh-eating zombies created in a Nazi experiment.

The idea of Nazi zombies in the middle of the Spanish Civil War is such a ludicrous concept that it should have been at least entertaining, while there are a few scenes that offer some decent action scenes and hilarious moments. There really isn’t much to this movie, it follows several very beat by beat plot points that a lot of zombie movies tend to do, it’s basically the adventures of this one group of characters who move to several locations and progressively meet more and more zombies until by the end they reach an army. The movie is also very cheap a lot of it feels like something that you would catch randomly on some obscure TV channel especially with the kills being very basic and the blood being very laughable. Not much else to say here, if you have seen at least one zombie movie you have already seen this one. There’s some entertainment to be had but it’s not enough to give this one a watch.

Valley Of The Dead is available on Netflix!

American Carnage is a fun horror comedy with a well executed premise.

After a governor issues an executive order to arrest the children of undocumented immigrants, the newly detained youth are offered an opportunity to have their charges dropped by volunteering to provide care to the elderly.

American Carnage is a fun little movie with pretty interesting and grotesque premise, the only main flaw is that it does take a bit to get going but if you can get past that then you are in for a ride. The cast does a really solid job here particularly Jenna Ortega (her fourth major role this year), Eric Dane and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. They all truly give such entertaining performances that the movie run pretty smoothly, the gore and makeup are pretty well done as well when combined together they both stick out. Not every joke in the movie completely lands, but this is a horror comedy where there’s actually some decently funny scenes here, what does help this movie is it takes advantage of the bizarre premise while make it a ton of fun!!

American Carnage is available on all VOD Platforms.

Persuasion is a lesson on when ignoring the source material goes horribly wrong.

When Frederick Wentworth — the one who got away — crashes back into Anne Elliot’s life, she must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.

Not going to go on about Persuasion for that long, because I’m not going to pretend like I’m some Jane Austin enthusiast, but what I do know is this was a very poor attempt of modernizing an adaption that didn’t need to be modernized. This is the complete opposite of what Emma (2020) was where Emma (2020) respected the source material , Persuasion attempts to try and add this whole “girlboss/tumblr dialogue” to it. The only positives here is some of the filming where it does take advantage of the setting in some cases and the performances Dakota Johnson, Henry Golding and Cosmo Jarvis are clearly trying their best but the script is just not giving them enough room to breathe at all, it’s very cluttered with so many modernized lines that make little to no sense in context of the story. I’m not exactly sure what they were going for here but whatever it was this was a huge misfire, especially when you combine it with the dreadful pacing that completely stops the movie in it’s tracks. While Persuasion might not be one of the absolute worst movies of the year, it sure is one of the most dull and uninteresting ones.

Persuasion is available on Netflix.

1Up is a huge game over.

Valerie is a competitive gamer whose impressive skills have landed her a place on her university’s male-dominated esports team. Told she’ll never be a starting player, Valerie forms an all-girl team to take down the guys at the national championship.

1Up is directed by Kyle Newman (Fanboys and Barely Lethal) and it’s a huge mess of a movie, to start out the best part about the movie is the representation. Hari Nef (who’s a trans woman) plays Sloane a trans woman and Lolita Milena (a paraplegic actress) plays Jenna who uses a wheelchair, so it’s nice there was some actual representation here and both of which happen to be the ones who got a few laughs out of me. They worked with what they were given and for a messy script they tried their hardest to make it work. Everything else can be summed up as what if we copied Pitch Perfect, made it about video games instead of singing and it was terrible. Heck the movie his it’s own fat Amy which the movie makes painfully obvious. The major problem here is the writing it’s the same sort of stuff that I’ve said in the past about Buzzfeed studios, they are so dedicated to shoving this “haha #relatable” humor down the viewer’s throat to the point where it becomes insulting. There’s even a Leroy Jenkins joke a meme that came from a video uploaded back that went viral in 2005, I get they used it because it has to do with video games but did they really need to shove a very old meme in here? The other characters are stereotypes who don’t have any defining traits besides the ones they are assigned, Paris Berelc plays the typical main character, Ruby Rose plays the typical mentor character (her acting here is dreadful), D.J. Mausner plays the fat Amy like character I mentioned earlier and Madison Baines plays the typical smart character. What made Pitch Perfect so great was that it knew what the the viewer wanted, some very solid drama, memorable jokes and great music. Aside from the occasional laugh you just don’t get that here with 1Up, If it hadn’t been for Hari Nef and Lolita Milena this would have easily been the worst movie so far this year.

1up is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Zombies 3 is dead on arrival.

Zed anticipates an athletic scholarship while Addison gears up for Seabrook’s first international cheer-off. Then suddenly, extraterrestrial beings arrive in Seabrook, provoking something other than friendly competition.

I guess one of the more interesting things about Zombies 3 is that it got the Disney+ upgrade treatment, for those that don’t know the previous two movies Zombies and Zombies 2 were Disney Channel Original Movies. And while the movie at times does seem like it still has a made for TV aura to it, there definitely is the noticeable upgrade changes (mostly the songs that were surprisingly catchy). However like the two previous movies unless you are a die hard fan this is going to be more or less be the same thing, the characters are still not investing and the jokes are just not funny, as I said earlier the only fun moments are the songs which even then are something I will probably never look back at.

Zombies 3 is available on Disney+

Vortex is a beautifully crafted important film about dementia and heart conditions.

A retired psychiatrist with dementia and a struggling author with a heart condition live their final days together in an apartment.

Vortex is directed by Gasper Noé who’s known for his disturbing yet fascinating work, Vortex however is a bit different (some may argue this is just as disturbing if not MORE disturbing since this does actually happen), Vortex is essentially about a retired psychiatrist with dementia and an author with a heart condition living their final days together until their deaths. Immediately from the very beginning of the film it captures your eye as the entire film is done in a split screen format, we get to see what both Lui (Dario Argento) and Françoise Lebrun are doing, the conversations they have and their emotions. There’s so much attention to detail that is captured, by having the split screen the viewer can take in the full picture of each conversation and for the film to be explored. The acting combined with the writing is incredibly raw to the point where this almost feels like a documentary that is documenting the final days of two elderly people. It shows what it’s like to go through dementia and heart conditions and doesn’t shy away from that either, the filming is truly beautiful and brings the viewer quite close to the characters. It’s a depressing yet important film that goes all out on it’s themes, I highly recommend watching Vortex knowing as little as possible!!

Vortex is available on all VOD platforms.

Happening is a brutally honest picture of unsafe abortions

In 1963, student Anne has a bright future ahead of her, but her dreams of finishing her studies is shattered when she becomes pregnant. As her final exams approach, Anne decides to take matters into her own hands.

Every once and awhile you get a film that doesn’t sugarcoat it’s subject, it’s completely honest with the viewer about said subject. Happening directed by Audrey Diwan is one of those films, the film comments on the unsafe ways an abortion was done back in 1963. The film is incredibly hard to watch at times mainly due to the film being as raw as possible, the acting from the cast is truly outstanding some of the best performances so far this year. Anamarie Vartolomei in the lead role is just magnificent, she gives such a down to earth performance that is both beautiful and tragic at the same time. There’s so much passion put into her performance that really adds an incredible amount to the role, the direction from Diwan is flawless. There’s several quiet scenes that make the viewer take in what they are watching, Diwan creates a character study like film that makes the viewer feel the pain and frustration Vartolomei feels. The film itself is intimate especially when the abortion scenes come up particularly the homemade abortion attempts that are very hard to watch. The film doesn’t shy away from those scenes at all it’s in your face due to the wonderfully crafted filming and the well focused aspect ratio, Happening truly is a master class of filmmaking that isn’t afraid to to show the very hard sides of an important topic, the film mainly works due to everything blending so well together. This is a film that must be seen.

Happening is available on all VOD platforms.
