Go Back To China (2020), M.O.M (2020) and Spenser Confidential (2020)

When spoiled rich girl Sasha Li blows through most of her trust fund, she is cut off by her father and forced to go back to China and work for the family toy business. This was a pretty big disappointment, Anna Akana gives a decent performance and is quite frankly the only reason why I kept watching it. I think my biggest issues with this movie are two major things, one the movie tries way too hard to get you to sympathize for the father who is just unlikable in every single way possible. Two the movie really does not have much to say plus it really doesn’t do much. The movie seems to have trouble figuring out what plot line to stick with, it feels like it recycled through at least 2 or 3 plots during the running time. At the very least the acting, writing and the filming are passable, it is still a shame however because this movie did have a lot of potential to be a decent movie.

A distraught mother suspects her teenage son is plotting a school shooting, but when he slips through the cracks of the system, she is forced to take matters into her own hands. Picture We Need To Talk About Kevin as a found footage movie with less character development and you have this movie. I thought what the movie was trying to go for was interesting enough, the main issue is the character development. The son is psychotic for the sake of being psychotic there really isn’t any build up or showing how or why the son is doing what he’s doing, it’s all just “oh so he’s just doing this for no reason” plus a majority of the movie is the mother character talking to the camera which would be fine if it led to something interesting but unfortunately it doesn’t. The movie is decently acted, in terms of being shot and the writing is okay at times. Otherwise the movie is very below average and is definitely one of those found footage movies that I’ll forget I watched.

5/10 C

When two Boston police officers are murdered, ex-cop Spenser teams up with his no-nonsense roommate, Hawk, to take down criminals. Awful with every sense of the word…What the hell happened to Peter Berg? This is the second terrible movie in a row (Mile 22) this is even worse and trust me that’s really saying something. If you have seen any given movie that has this exact same premise congratulations you have already seen this movie, the acting is horrendous it feels like Mark Wahlberg is phoning it in, everyone else looks miserable from just being on set. The writing is garbage it’s honestly hard to believe that this is from the same guy who did Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor. There is seriously not a lot to say about this one, it’s a typical action crime comedy movie except it’s horrendous. It’s one of those movies where at first you finish watching it you think to yourself “it could have been worse” but the more you think about it the worse it gets. The jokes aren’t funny at the slightest, the action scenes are piss poor and are just laughable when compared to some scenes in Berg’s other movies and the movie is predictable. This is a complete embarrassment of a movie avoid this one at all costs.

Guns Akimbo (2020)

A guy relies on his newly-acquired gladiator skills to save his ex-girlfriend from kidnappers.
Jason Lei Howden’s Guns Akimbo is incredibly ironic especially when the director himself turns out to be a troll and a racist. Shortly before this film’s release Howden went on a racist rampage on twitter I’m not going to say the full story but if your interested look up his name into google or name search him on twitter. Anyway the movie itself is a mess, the standouts here are Daniel Radcliffe and Samara Weaving they definitely try their best with such a very weak script, the action scenes are fine enough but when this movie tries to build character development is where it falls flat. This is the type of movie where if you just want good action scenes and some okay acting then this might be okay. The direction is honestly really bad, it feels like it’s trying way too hard to be a cross between Nerve and Deadpool (two far better movies.) plus the movie does feel like it was rushed towards the end, lastly I just don’t find the movie very funny at all. Maybe if this came out back in the early 2010s the humor might be more forgivable (keyword being might.) overall I really don’t know about this one it has it’s ideas but for me it’s wasted potential. I know some people like it as a mindless action movie which is perfectly okay.

Bad Boys For Life (2020)

The wife and son of a Mexican drug lord embark on a vengeful quest to kill all those involved in his trial and imprisonment including Miami Detective Mike Lowrey. When Mike gets wounded, he teams up with partner Marcus Burnett and AMMO a special tactical squad to bring the culprits to justice. But the old-school, wisecracking cops must soon learn to get along with their new elite counterparts if they are to take down the vicious cartel that threatens their lives.

This was a pleasant surprise if I’m going to be quite honest, while it did catch my interest with the trailers it always felt like one of those movies that could really fall in either decision. Luckily it falls in the right direction, I will tell you one thing I love about this movie seeing Will Smith be actually really good again. He does a fantastic job in his role and honestly gives the best performance in his career in awhile. Which is something really great to see because I have always liked the guy. Martin Lawrence was also really great, the chemistry between the two is just top notch. The humor is actually genuinely funny there were some jokes in the movie that I found myself laughing at, the new directors I thought added a nice touch to the movie as well. So overall the movie is a very fun movie that is so far one of the best of 2020.

Like A Boss (2020)

Two friends with very different ideals start a beauty company together. One is more practical while the other wants to earn her fortune and live a lavish lifestyle.

This movie is pretty much the stereotypical “January comedy movie that is painfully unfunny” there’s so many problems with this movie it’s not even funny. I’ll go over the major ones, first off Tiffany Haddish seems to think that the peak of comedy is by yelling, it’s getting really tiring especially when you realize that she’s done this in almost every single role she’s been in. The rest of the cast isn’t much better here Rose Byrne feels very basic in a very bad way, there really isn’t anything interesting about her. Salma Hayek plays a very over the top villain and it’s just painful to sit through, it’s quite embarrassing. The writing is painful, the jokes aren’t funny like at all I’m not sure what the hell they were trying to go for with some of these jokes but they really missed the mark. I feel like the worst part about this movie is that it’s just not that interesting or engaging, it’s one of those really bad movies where you just sit there and think “when is this going to be over?” with some bad movies I often like to see how bad they can get which at least gives a movie some interest. With this movie you just don’t get that, overall Like A Boss is a huge waste of time it’s not funny, not well acted and very poorly written skip this one.

Bombshell (2019)

A group of women take on Fox News head Roger Ailes and the toxic atmosphere he presided over at the network. I think the most surprising thing about this movie is this is by the same director who did the Austin Powers movies and Meet the Fockers, I have to admit I actually thought this movie was pretty solid. In terms of acting this movie does a fantastic job Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, Kate McKinnon and Charlize Theron all do a really great job. The standout being Charlize Theron she looks identical to Megyn Kelly it’s very convincing, the writing was also pretty strong. It did have it’s hiccups here and there that could have been improved but for the most part I thought the writing was solid. I do feel the movie starts out pretty slow, it takes some time to get going which does get a little bothersome, it’s kind of a weird choice but it does pick up as it goes on. Overall Bombshell is a really solid movie, while it might not be one of the best of 2019 it’s still worth a watch!!

Knives Out (2019)

A detective investigates the death of a patriarch of an eccentric, combative family. This will be a NO SPOILER REVIEW!!!! Meaning I’m going to keep this review simple and straight to the point because this is one of those movies where it you have to see it for yourself, I could potentially give something away which I don’t want to do at all. Anyway I’ll start with the obvious Rian Johnson knows how to make a film, he knows how to get the audience to expect something only to surprise you with something completely different that twists the movie. Which is something I have not seen many people do at all, the acting is some of the best of the year. There’s so many fantastic performances here between Ana de Armas, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, LaKeith Stanfield and several others. It’s impossible to say who really was the best, everyone brings something to the movie that’s quite incredible. The writing is really impressive, not only is it cleverly written but it’s also hilarious and brings this humor into it that’s genuinely funny. The direction is another one of the movie’s strongest parts, mostly due to the characters being written really well and the whole mystery itself is also cleverly written. If I can sum up this movie in a few words it’s…cleverly written, because that’s what this film is!! Just when you think you solved the mystery the film throws something else at you which keeps you guessing. Overall Knives Out is one of the best films of 2019, Rian Johnson proves once again that he’s one of the best directors working today! Check this one out when you can!!

Last Christmas (2019)

Kate is a young woman subscribed to bad decisions. Her last date with disaster? That of having accepted to work as Santa’s elf for a department store. However, she meets Tom there. Her life takes a new turn. For Kate, it seems too good to be true. While there might not be a lot to Paul Feig’s latest film Last Christmas, it still manages to be a very harmless romantic comedy that does have it’s moments. The cast is very strong here Emilia Clarke is the standout, along with Henry Golding and Emma Thompson. So as far as acting goes the movie is pretty solid, the writing is pretty decent as well it’s nothing too spectacular but there are some genuinely strong moments in this movie that are effective. The movie doesn’t really bring anything new to the table in terms of storytelling but I will say the movie does at least try to make it interesting, for the most part I think it works well. The soundtrack is also pretty strong as well, overall Last Christmas may not be amazing but it is a very decent watch that wouldn’t hurt to check out.

The Knight Before Christmas (2019)

A medieval English knight is magically transported to the present day where he falls for a high school science teacher who is disillusioned by love. You know what I’ll give it credit, it tries to do something a bit different when it comes to Christmas movies. Vanessa Hudgens was easily the best part, everyone else wasn’t too bad either. With that said the movie isn’t really anything special, these Christmas movies are starting to get really hard to talk about because they don’t have much to them. While yes it does do something a bit different that doesn’t mean it really succeeded, the execution is very mixed and just doesn’t do much at the end. The writing is pretty much what you expect, in fact this movie is pretty much what you expect so if you are looking for a random Christmas movie that is harmless I guess check this out.

Playing With Fire (2019)

A crew of rugged firefighters meet their match when attempting to rescue three rambunctious kids. The early 2000s called they want their crappy family comedy movie back, seriously what the hell was this? I expected this to be bad but I thought it was just going to be a harmless family movie that won’t standout. But when it comes to being one of the worst movies of the year this movie sure does stand out, first off the acting is just terrible….I feel really bad for the cast especially Keegan-Michael Key and John Cena. But let me tell you the writing is even worse…it’s filled with fart and poop jokes as well as other jokes that are not funny at the slightest, it doesn’t help this movie is pretty much any given family movie that has been released in the last few years but even worse. It has nothing new to offer at all, overall there is not that much else to be said. Only that it’s kind of baffling something like this actually came out in 2019.

Primal and Let It Snow Movie Reviews

A big-game hunter for zoos has booked passage on a Latin American shipping freighter with a fresh haul of exotic and deadly animals from the Amazon, including a rare white Jaguar – along with a political assassin being extradited to the U.S in secret. Two days into the journey, the assassin escapes and releases the captive animals, throwing the ship into chaos. Let’s be honest here did anyone expect this to be good? The good thing about this movie is it’s hilariously bad, there are some scenes that are absolutely ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh Nicholas Cage delivers some hilarious moments, but at the same time there were some huge missed opportunities with this movie. There could have been more jokes with the animals….speaking of animals let’s talk about the CGI Jaguar…..it’s unbelievable how bad it really is, like it was so bad I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! It felt like someone watched a marathon of garbage straight to DVD movies and decided to put it in. Besides that this movie really doesn’t have anything else that’s worth laughing about, the acting and writing are terrible. The direction is horrendous and it’s not very memorable outside of a few scenes and CGI Jaguar.

In a small town on Christmas Eve, a snowstorm brings together a group of young people. At least it’s better than Holiday in the Wild? I honestly don’t have much to say about this movie, it’s a very below average romantic comedy that has nothing new to offer. The acting is the highlight of this movie, mostly due to a very solid cast and everyone tries their best they can with what they are given. But the story has been done to death numerous times that in the end it just doesn’t matter at all…
