Barely escaping an avalanche during a family ski vacation in the Alps, a married couple is thrown into disarray as they are forced to reevaluate their lives and how they feel about each other.
I was honestly considering skipping this movie all together and now that I watched it I should have done that, if someone asked me “what is the most uninteresting movie you have seen so far this year?” I would say Downhill, while it may not be worse then say Fantasy Island it still has a lot that has so much going against it. First off this movie is actually a remake which I did not know until I finished watching it, apparently it’s a remake of the film “Force Majeure” which is directed by Swedish Director Ruben Ostlund. Let’s start with the acting…it’s just not good, there is absolutely no energy put into this movie which yes I understand this is supposed to be about a dysfunctional family but still nothing in this movie made me care on what was going on. Will Farrell definitely is trying his hardest but it just did not work at all, what this movie suffers from is tone. It wants to be this dark comedy with drama thrown into it, instead of combing the two it’s always one or the other. Some scenes it’s solely drama and then others it’s nothing but comedy (which isn’t even funny) a lot of the movie feels like a terrible family get together where some family members get to into a fight about their marriage and then try to get everyone else involved and it just becomes awkward. The humor is just not clever at all, a lot of it is predictable, very awkward in some scenes and just overall not funny. It did not help that this movie was marketed as solely a comedy, which I have absolutely no idea why you would do that. Overall there really isn’t much else to say, it’s a movie that came and went and that’s for the best.
Set to a new wave ’80s soundtrack, a pair of young lovers from different backgrounds defy their parents and friends to stay together. A musical adaptation of the 1983 film.
Not going to lie this really surprised me, I completely understand why someone would not like this movie like at all. It’s a remake of a beloved film, however I just couldn’t help but like this one. Anyway first a bit of backstory with this movie, so it was originally supposed to be released in June 2018 however the controversy with Logan Paul happened you know the Suicide Forest video where he filmed a dead body. So it was shelved for two years, anyway let’s talk about the movie. I thought the cast overall was pretty great Jessica Roth being the highlight, she did great with the songs and brought a lot of energy to the movie as well. Now let’s talk about the Elephant in the room Logan Paul, I have to be honest here….he wasn’t that bad? I believe it’s mainly due to him playing the asshole character which fits him pretty well, had it been any other role I think he would have done a terrible job. The songs were overall pretty great, some were definitely better than others, some singing voices could have used a much bigger improvement while others stole the show like Jessica Roth’s who was easily the best out of the bunch. As much as I found this movie to be pretty solid, I do find it to be a very pointless remake. It’s one of those remakes that just kind of happened but it’s not hurting anybody, overall it’s a decent movie. There’s a lot of fun and it definitely has the energy, it’s definitely not as good as the original but that’s to be expected.
Tim thinks he’s invited the woman of his dreams on a work retreat to Hawaii, realizing too late he mistakenly texted someone from a nightmare blind date.
What can I honestly say about this movie? I had no idea what the hell this movie was, who it was from and who made it….I decided to check it out after seeing a few bad reviews from it because well if you have been following me for awhile you know I like to torture myself. So I start the movie and……it’s by Happy Madison Productions…heck even the director of this movie previously directed another Happy Madison movie Father Of The Year, so how’s the movie itself? Oh well besides painful and one of the worst things I’ve seen this year not much…the acting is horrendous David Spade looks like he wants to get off set immediately and who can honestly blame him? The writing is terrible, the jokes are just not funny at all. Heck the humor is so predictable, I believe I chuckled once through this entire movie and even then it was sort of a “this is a so dumb” kind of laugh. The movie is very formulaic you have already seen stories like this before but done better, it brings nothing new to the table nothing but pain and torture. The movie itself is annoying as well, with many characters who are super obnoxious and jokes that tend to get annoying as well. I think the best way to describe this movie is that one person who swears they are funny but ends up being annoying instead. That’s the movie if it were a person, overall The Wrong Missy should be avoided at all costs do not make the same mistake I did.
Johana Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein) is a bright, quirky, 16-year-old who uses her colorful imagination to regularly escape her humdrum life in Wolverhampton and live out her creative fantasies.
Not a whole lot to say here, which is kind of sad to say because I was genuinely looking forward to this movie. Beanie Feldstein is the reason I checked this one out and is pretty much the only reason to check this out. She gives a very solid performance to a movie that’s lacking in several areas, for one thing the movie doesn’t do enough to separate itself from a lot of other coming of age movies. It just does what many other films have done except nowhere near as good. The humor rarely ever lands, I hate to use this word but the humor often just feels very “cringy” like it’s trying way too hard to be relatable but it’s not. The acting from everyone else is just kind of whatever and nothing to write home about, I will say one thing that the movie isn’t necessarily bad it’s just a very below average coming of age film that doesn’t add anything new to the genre.
5/10 C A family find themselves terrorized by their eight-year-old son’s imaginary friend.
When I saw this movie was directed by the guy who did “Still/Born” I was a bit curious because I did like “Still/Born” well enough. However “Z” is very formulaic that really does not offer anything new to the genre. The CGI towards the end of the film really took me out of it mainly due to how goofy it looked, acting wise it’s just okay nothing really special at all and really not worth mentioning, the same can be said for the writing. It’s a very below average horror movie that might be good to put on in the background otherwise I don’t recommend it.
5/10 C A 30-something woman navigating through love and heartbreak over the course of one year. During that time, she will unlock the secrets to her life in a sudden turn of events and in the most surprising of places.
Can somebody tell Drake Doremus to stop making the same exact film so many times? Thank you in advance!! If you don’t recognize Doremus’s name he directed Zoe, Newness, Equals, Breathe In, Like Crazy and a few others. My main issue with “Endings Beginnings” is as I said before the exact same thing as some of his previous movies. Like this movie is pretty much some of the movies I just mentioned but the plot is tweaked a bit and a few things are switched around. Shailene Woodley is in this movie for some reason, she does a decent job and works what she’s given. The same can be said for Sebastian Stan yes that’s right Bucky is in this movie for whatever reason, all joking aside he does a decent job it’s just the writing is so uninspired. Then there’s Jamie Doran who I just do not like and he’s not any better here. It feels like he woke up one day and said “I’m not going to bother” which let’s be fair nobody would…anyway the writing as I said before is uninspired it’s the same exact thing as some of Doremus’s other films. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Doremus has a copypasta of the scripts he uses and just copy and pastes them and calls it a day. But seriously as much as I am criticizing Doremus I do like some of his movies Newness is pretty decent, I kind of liked Zoe It’s just such a shame to see him make the same thing over and over again. As much as I talked how much I didn’t like this movie, it’s not necessarily “bad” it’s actually decently made, has decent cinematography and is overall harmless just not something I would ever tell someone to watch. Overall if you have seen any of Doremus’s movies you have already seen this one, I can’t give this a recommendation.
A man searches tirelessly for his missing son who he has not seen in years. When a body is located, the entire family’s life is turned upside-down and they must all learn how to reconnect with one another. This is an interesting one, I watched this several days ago it was hard for me to decide what rating I wanted to give this movie. But after thinking about it the movie has some really solid stuff in it. First off the cinematography is top notch, there are some really beautiful shots that were just wonderful to look at, the acting is quite great everyone does a pretty solid job in their roles. The writing could have been a bit stronger, plus I’m not going to lie this movie at times does come off as a Wes Andreson rip-off. Luckily it’s not to the point where it’s directly stealing, the movie does come up with it’s own ideas and combines the two so it has that going for it. It’s also a very relaxing movie to watch that I would most certainly watch again. I recommend giving this a go!
7/10 B
Under small town scrutiny, a withdrawn farmer’s daughter forges an intimate friendship with a worldly but reckless new girl in 1960s Oklahoma.
I really don’t have a lot to say about this one, mostly because a huge portion of the movie just did not do anything for me. I will say the first act of the movie was pretty strong and I liked where the movie was goin, but then it just kind of does a complete turn around in a not very good way. The performances were strong, the writing was solid but could have used another look, I do appreciate what this film was trying to do I just think it didn’t do it very well.
6/10 C+ Based on Peter Carey’s novel. The story of Australian bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang as they flee from authorities during the 1870s.
Justin Kurzel redeems himself with this movie and I couldn’t be happier, he directed Snowtown, Macbeth (Which I love) and the abomination Assassin’s Creed. True History Of The Kelly Gang is very raw and quite powerful, it really does not shy away from violence which is good to see especially knowing the topic of the film. It’s very well directed and has a lot of emotion put into it, the movie hits really hard when comes to the writing. It’s very well written with some very dark scenes that truly hit it out of the park, the running time of 2 hours and 4 minutes may seem like a problem at first but trust me when I say that it really is not a problem. It’s one of those movies where you really don’t feel the running time at all. It’s a very engaging movie that drags you into it due to just how interesting it is! This is one I highly recommend!!
8/10 B+
Greed tells the story of self-made British billionaire Sir Richard McCreadie, whose retail empire is in crisis. For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion, bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street. But after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicised and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos.
I mean I’ll give the movie this….it’s not as bad as I thought it would be? That still doesn’t make it necessarily “good” I put good in quotation marks because I truly don’t know how I feel about this movie. It feels like the type of movie that wants to tackle a bunch of issues but the stuff it says about said issues everyone and their grandmother already knows. The humor isn’t all that funny, I remember laughing about maybe two times when I watched it. A lot of it heavily relies on dropping names of celebrities, movies and more. Then there’s the movie’s own humor which really doesn’t stick, as far as acting…I guess it’s okay? Nobody really did a terrible job there was just nothing really noteworthy to mention, I really don’t know this movie just kind of exists. It’s not hurting anyone it just happens to be there and that’s all there is to it. If it sounds interesting to you by all means give it a shot but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Before I start I want to apologize for being very inactive, a lot has been going on and I really need to take a small break. I’m back now and the good news is I did watch a chunk of movies, not just these three so expect more posts soon.
This mix of a scripted buddy comedy road movie and a real hidden camera prank show follows the outrageous misadventures of two buds stuck in a rut who embark on a cross-country road trip to NYC. The storyline sets up shocking real pranks.
Bad Trip Is one of those hidden camera prank movies, I’m not the biggest fan of the genre but there is a lot to like about this movie. First off Eric Andre is really great, you can tell he is very passionate about what he does and it seems like he has a ton of fun while doing it. It’s very refreshing to see something like that, plus there’s a lot of good laughs to get out of from this movie. Yes the movie does have a lot of road trip elements that have been done before, but one can definitely make the argument that it takes those elements and make them it’s own. Which again is refreshing to see as opposed to a lot of other road trip movies that just kind of play it safe and that’s it. It’s a solid movie that gets the job done, I recommend checking this one out!
7/10 B When a wealthy elderly man dies and unexpectedly leaves his estate to his new caregiver, she’s drawn into a web of deception and murder. If she’s going to survive, she’ll have to question everyone’s motives – even the people she loves.
Garbage with every sense of the word, this is basically a Lifetime movie version of Knives Out. How this even made it on to Netflix is beyond me, this also reminded me of 2019’s Secret Obsession which funnily enough this movie is far worse than Secret Obsession. At least with Secret Obsession you had Brenda Song trying her hardest with such a garbage script, with Dangerous Lies there are no positives about this movie. The acting is so lifeless and just horrendous, not once did I care about anything that was going on. The story is a complete and total mess this felt like three different directors wanted to make a movie they couldn’t come to an agreement what story elements they wanted to use so they just threw everything in the pot. What I mean by this is this movie at times wants to be a drama other times it wants to be a thriller and then other times it wants to be some type of romantic movie. As I said before this movie is a complete and total mess, I genuinely had no idea what was going on after the 20 minute mark mostly because the movie feels like a lot of scenes that weren’t used in other films put together. The writing is horrendous how someone can write this and say “this looks good!” Is beyond me, what else can I really say about this garbage? It’s a horrendous movie that has no business being on Netflix…
Disgrace To Cinema F Sarah tries to start anew in LA, but her neighbours are not what they seem.
This is going to be short, it’s a very decent horror movie to put on in the background or when your bored. That’s not to say that this movie does have it’s good bits, because it most certainly does. It has a decent atmosphere that’s thrilling enough that you stick around through the movie.
After discovering a magical mask, an 11-year-old aspiring wrestler enters a competition to become the next WWE superstar.
Last year we had Fighting For My Family which was a fantastic film and was one of the biggest surprises of last year, we go from that to this movie…this is an example of what NOT to do when making a WWE film. I understand the target audience was mostly for kids who are fans of WWE but that doesn’t justify it being really bad. The movie is extremely formulaic it’s not even funny the movie pretty much goes like this kid wants to be something when he grows up in this case a wrestler, kid discovers item/way he can do just that right now, kid does said thing and starts becoming famous. Kid let’s fame go to his head and starts ditching his friends, the whole climax is a redemption arc and the kid faces the big end situation in this case battle. If you have seen any movie like that I just described congratulations you have already seen this movie. There are some funny bits here and there but that doesn’t help the movie at all, the acting and writing are terrible and as I said the story has been done to death numerous times, overall it’s another disposal Netflix movie that should be avoided.
1/10 F While trying to make his sister’s wedding day go smoothly, Jack finds himself juggling an angry ex-girlfriend, an uninvited guest with a secret, a misplaced sleep sedative, and the girl that got away in alternate versions of the same day.
What is there even to comment on? Netflix has done this type of movie before the whole deja vu element they have used in the film “Naked” at least with “Naked” it didn’t take itself seriously sure it wasn’t good but it was very harmless. With this movie it takes itself pretty seriously and it feels like a chore to get through, outside of the acting which does have a talented cast especially Olivia Munn (who for whatever reason is in this movie) I seriously can’t think of anything else in this movie I really liked. The major problem with this movie was the writing, it was very cliched and very uninspired I’m not saying the writing should have been Oscar worthy but it most certainly should not have been what we were given. Plus the movie itself is just not interesting, it feels very poorly put together and doesn’t really know where it wants to go towards the end. Give this one a pass..
Facing expulsion from college over a misunderstanding, a bipolar student indulges his misery at a strip club where he befriends a gorgeous, intelligent, outrageous woman and they hatch a madcap scheme to prove his innocence.
What makes me respect Inside The Rain is Director Aaron Fisher does In fact have bipolar disorder which he wanted to make this film based on his experience with the disorder. The movie is a very honest film that has a lot of great moments, it has some really great humor thrown in there as well. The bits with Rosie Perez are really great, the acting does have a few missteps from a few people but for the most part it’s quite great! The writing is pretty decent and leads to some funny and some strong moments, some parts do feel a bit formulaic especially the ending. But the movie is forgiven due to just how charming it really is and it makes sure the audience connects with the main character. Definitely something worth watching!!
Twelve-year-old Kareem Manning hires a criminal to scare his mom’s new boyfriend -police officer James Coffee – but it backfires, forcing Coffee and Kareem to team up in order to save themselves from Detroit’s most ruthless drug kingpin.
First and foremost I feel incredibly sorry for Terrance Little Gardenhigh, this movie gave him such a garbage script to work with to the point where you just feel really really bad. This movie is an absolute waste of time and shows how low Netflix Original movies are willing to sink, this movie came from Michael Dowse who directed Stuber and What If. The acting is complete bull crap from Ed Helms desperately trying to be funny to the point where it’s a flat out embarrassment, to Taraji P. Henson completely being wasted in the cast. The jokes are horrendous a lot of it heavily relies on unfunny twitter humor, it’s the type of humor where if you go on twitter and you see a serious or unfunny tweets and for whatever reason people find it hysterical. Then a lot of it is “hey we said a curse word please laugh” type humor which is the lowest I feel a comedy can go for, the story itself has been told 40 different times and in much better ways, I really have no idea what else to say…this movie has been done before several times but this happens to be one of the worst attempts…
Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. Onward is definitely the movie that shocked me the most so far this year. Dan Scanlon who directed Monsters University which sadly I was not the biggest fan of. Plus I really think the advertising for Onward was not that great, however life is full of surprises and this movie turned out to be extremely great! First off the chemistry between Chris Pratt and Tom Holland was fantastic, I was really impressed with how well they both worked together, the animation was both stunning and really strong! It gave the movie it’s own unique feel which I really loved, one of the biggest reasons I was very skeptical about this movie at first was the character design and the style of the movie (adventure type) . I didn’t know if the movie could pull off something interesting with these types of characters, or pull off something new. However the movie takes a similar concept and turns it into it’s own, it throws in some Lord Of The Rings elements for the story and for the characters the movie gives them some great character development. Plus the movie does have it’s emotional moments which I will say almost made me cry, the final act is definitely worth the wait. It’s emotional, heartwarming and really well done, I had my doubts about this movie at the beginning but it proved me wrong which it ends up being one of my favorites of the year!
